Bass sounds from a guitar?

Wow!! Thanks for the long reply. Good information and thanks for the offer of letting me know more about it. I have some friends there and visit a few times a year. Y

ou are in the blues scene so I will venture to play the game of "You're from x do you y..."

Do you know a bar in the bottom called Medly's/Medlies (Sp?)? They host blues bands all the time. My friend Rebecca is the bartender there on the weekends I think Th-Sun. Have you been there? It is run by this ornery woman, I can't remember her name.

I've been to a few titty bars there, 3 different ones. One actually used to be a sizzler or something and the girls dance on the salad bar. Funny time. To bad about the "t-bar" and "pasty" rules.

Yeah, the cost of living is a HUGE plus. I am tired of working a day job, making great money (so does my wife), and living in a 1 bedroom apt. My "studio" is a walk in closet. If we bought something here I feel like it would be signing my death certificate, or at least my application to the bitter, overweight, middle aged man club. I feel like I'm half way there already (I'm 28). lol! I would be a slave to a mortgage.

Tried to work out a transfer with my job and it looked good until Enron hit the fan, the economy is slow to recover, and my company is going through a spin-off. If my wife or I get laid off one of us will move to Richmond, get settled, and then the other one would move too.

Finding a job in Richmond, especially remotely, has proven difficult. My wife probably has the best shot as she has financial services experience. I work in strategy consulting. There are a few companies there, and the Martin Agency would be cool. No luck yet.

I haven't made it to Medley's yet; there's an open jam on Sundays at Legend's Brewery I've been to. A good place to see live acts, if you haven't been there already, is Poe's Pub about a mile east of the Bottom--they have the most interesting variety of acts of any place I've been to. Good ribs, too.

Yeah, I've been to that former Sizzler, lol--"Richard's Rendezvous." Not the best one in town by far, but fun in a tacky sort of way.

Your wife, and perhaps you too, might want to check into Capital One--they're centered in Richmond. Circuit City has its HQ here, too, as does SunTrust I think. It would definitely be cool to work for the Martin Agency, if only because their building and location are so killer. The only corporate recruiter I know deals strictly in I.T., but I'm sure there are some posted on the web. Both my brothers-in-law got jobs in Richmond fairly quickly by working with a headhunter. In case you haven't looked through the local classifieds, the Richmond Times-Dispatch has them online: www.timesdispatch.com.

My wife used to teach finance at VCU and says that they have a large marketing department and you might want to call a professor, explain that you're looking to relocate, and ask if he/she can suggest a "short list" of employers in your field. She says this is done all the time and that you might just get lucky should the professor feel like offering you some actual contacts. Just a thought.

Weird, I live in Richmond, never noticed anyone else from here posting on this board.
I've only lived here a year (lived in Williamsburg for 4 years before that, which is 45 minutes away), so I might not be as big an expert, and will basically be reiterating what was said above. Job situation here is pretty crappy, my girlfriend (who has a degree from William & Mary) looked for 4-5 months before being offered a full-time salaried job that she could stand. But then again, it only took me a couple of weeks, so I guess it's all about luck. The low cost of living is the biggest advantage, the Fan is great, cheap, and cool. But be sure to look around a while before you pick an apartment to make sure you get the best deal, prices are going up. And stay away from River City Real Estate if you can, they kicked everybody out of our building 6 months after we moved in so they could renovate and charge higher prices (and they notified everybody about this THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS!). Look for a place being rented out by an individual rather than a company if you can. Another advantage is Plan 9, probably one of the best music/cd/record stores on the east coast, especially if you own a record player (they have a HUGE $1 record section).
Now the bad stuff: I'm into indie rock/punk/obscure weird music, so that's the background I'm coming from. The underground music scene is almost all VCU kids, and very based in hardcore punk - GWAR came out of RIchmond, but so did Avail. The liquor laws for clubs are very stringent, so clubs that let small bands play come and go very very quickly. The guitar store selection ain't that hot either, there's a Mars (blah) and a couple of smaller places that are crappy. My personal favorite is Candyland, which is small, very cluttered, all used stuff. The owner is a nice guy, he doesn't always have the best info though so do research beforehand. I've also had problems finding a practice space. My friends and I have been practicing in Williamsburg after having given up on looking for one here.
Personally, I love Richmond so far, but it can be frustrating.
Anyhow, if you have any other questions, feel free to email me too: naamme@yahoo.com.

Hey Pirateking,

I always go to Guitar Works on Cary St., then to Metro Sound on Broad Street; then, once I've made a shopping list, I call Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center in Rockville, MD and have them ship me whatever I want for nearly half the price, tax free. Their prices blow anything in town or anything I've seen online out of the water. And their shipping is rediculously low. They have a website, but don't post the prices. They'll email you the price on request, though. Check it out; the place is amazing.

I actually lived outside of DC for a few years, so I developed an extreme aversion to Chuck Levin's because the salespeople there were always nasty. I guess that's the bonus of ordering online, though. I'm kind of a used/vintage instrument fetishist, so that's why I prefer Candyland (and Atomic Music in DC, the holy grail of used guitar stores) to those others. I have never seen anything I was remotely interested in at Guitar Works or Boykins (on Broad). Seems like maybe Guitar Works makes most of their money from repairs or something, because their selection is horrible. Metro Sound seems pretty decent, I've never bought anything there, but they seem to have an ok selection of cool used stuff. One that bothers me is that they're one of those stores that puts their coolest guitars (read: the old vintage guitars that probably don't even work) on the wall as a display instead of selling them. That pisses me off. But other than that, it seems ok.

Thanks for the tips in the job search. If you get a chance could you ask your friend for the name of the headhunter? No rush. Sure would appreciate it. When I was there I copied out of the yellow pages, but most of them were not in our respective fields.

The university idea is great. Thanks!

Been trying the timesdispatch and capital one and some others, but I think that being in NY right now is probably not a great thing. We look like a hassle to interview and seem expensive.

Pirateking -- I am into indie rock/singersongwriter/jazz and other stuff too and don't really know what to expect. Seems like in addition to hardcore there is a fair amount of stoner/jamband rock. Some of which I like, some not really.

Hope to be there within a year, hopefully sooner. I think when we first thought about moving we thought of the surrounding areas with some land, a big house, etc. But now I think we are more thinking about in town like the fan. A little yard, a little less space (but still way more than NYC) and the ability to walk places, get fooed delivery etc. -- all the things I've gotten used to in NY.

Thanks again for the info. and the offer to answer other questions. You guys are a regular welcome wagon!

Adam,

The headhunter that my brothers-in-law had such success with was Robert Half International, a huge firm that I'm sure has local offices in NY. I tried to look up the agency that I used to share a suite with, but they're no longer in the book---maybe they were bought out by Robert Half...

Anyway, good luck.
