When I track bass I always leave some fret and finger noise so it cuts thru. But what do you do when at some part of the song the bass makes a solo, or the guitar mutes and it's just bass and drums? Do you apply a more conservative eq, or is it the playing style? Do you just keep it as it is, with all the metalic noise and high overtones?
Cheers, Andrés

do what sounds right. i usually don't change the eq on a bass solo, but i wouldn't hesitate if i felt it helped.

it's not uncommon to add reverb or other effects (like chorusing or delay), to a bass solo that you wouldn't want to hear during the ensemble parts.

I say if it's funky enough just leave it as nature intended it. If you made any eq adjustments for the rest of the song... try setting them to flat for the solo. Don't add too much high end that wasn't originally there or you will just get more hiss.

Once I made a song that was JUST a bass solo...

then I kicked my own ass.

I actually have learned to like some of those little imperfections. As long as it's not so overbearing that it ruins the music.
