While recording an electro-doom project for a friend this past weekend with all gear that I owned, I noticed that adding a little reverb to the bass really brought out all it's dynamics nicely, so I'm thinking of running a reverb pedal through the effects loop of my Ampeg. Any sugestions for a good quality but not too overly expensive unit?

asking for trouble - as im sure you know bass is very undirectional. Adding enviroment effects such a reverb is likley to kill all defenition and leave a very muddy sound.

I use reverb live, but very lightly when recording, less than 10 percent.

As an alternative to reverb, you might want to try just a very slight delay or flange or chorus. Keep the efx very light but just a touch can expand and really open up bass parts. Add too much and the sound will either get muddy or too boomy. I think bass players should expand their horrizons to beyond the standard thump thump thump. Guitarists have been using efx for years, why shouldn't bass players have the same freedom?

I was using the "hall reverb" function of my Fostex 8 track. The effects in that thing are really good, but obviously not top of the line. It's a much brighter sound then EQ alone has provided for me.

EH Holy Grail.

3 modes, good tone. I like mine.

For the money though, I would get a BOSS DD-6 gives you some looping capabilities, groovy reverse effects.

I use 8 million effects live for bass, but never reverb... in a live setting it can take an already tricky to distinguish sound and make it complete mud - usually the walls in the venue give more than enough verb!
But go nuts with everything else :D
