Today I recorded some tracks with a friend.
He has just aquired a new Musicman bass (not the super high-end, but $1G level)....its a very nice and super playing instument.
I really just wanted to practice getting bass recorded so we slapped down some cheesy keyboard beasts and he just grooves over the top.
I recorded direct and mic'd his amp.
Bass>DI>split>Ampeg BA115>Re-20 (about 15deg off axis center of cone about 2 inches of the grill) to a DBX 286A.
The DI went to a Tube MP (about 12 o'clock on the input....just barely making the light yellow).
Both went to my VS880.
And now.......the weirdness.
Normally when I do it this way I get a nice clean and full bottom end from the DI and those speaker-compressed mids and upper mids from the amp.
This time it was real thin and brittle from the DI and all the all the low end low end uhhmmphh was out of the mic and maybe a little from the pre.
I tried this set up with his Yamaha bass (and without the 286A which is a new addition) and got a REALLY nice DI'd sound.
Same deal DI>Art MP.
I like the amp sound I got mostly....needs a little scooping out....but full and poewrful.....but the DI'd sounds really .......anemic.....and uneven.
I tried pushing the MP a little harder but then it just got thin and fizzy.
Any thoughts??????

...oh and I didn't use any EQ on the VS880 because we only had cans to track with (i travelled up to him and he's sans monitors).
