Bass guitar pitch

I am recording a song on which I am playing bass. The problem is that the key of the song requires that I play the song higher up the fretboard, the result being that the bassline does not sound deep enough for my liking. If I detune the bass guitar, the notes are too low and muffled. Anyone know how I can get over this problem and get a decent sounding bass?
 
You could try an octave pedal like this. It doubles each note an ocvate below.
 
Or a bass octave pedal. Though, the 5-string would be best.
 
Or you can get heavier gauge strings. That'll let you tune lower without the strings getting flappy and rubbery.
