Bass guitar for recording

Good Day,
I'm looking for a low-price bass guitar for the studio. I don't give a rat's ass what it calls itself. Anyone have a relatively good sounding inexpensive bass to recommend?

Price? $450 and under.

I got a DeArmond Pilot Plus from Samash.com (a sore subject around here because lots of people got screwed around on their shipping)....on board pre, passive P and J pickups...does everything I need it to....$139....if yer brave go to the SA site, check out the DeArmond blow out...you might get lucky, like I did...it arrived in one piece and sounds great........

I know of 2 folks that got screwed on the more expensive Pilot Pro, mainly SA mistakes....I know of no one, even at other sites that has been screwed by getting the Pilot Plus.....

The Plus comes form the Indonesian plant, the Pro comes form the Korean plant......the Pro has supposedly better wood, but the chrome hardware might have issues......the Pro is ash, and the less expensive Plus is agathis (a conifer, sometimes called asian pine).....

Call around and see if anybody near you has some in stock, the entire DeArmond line that Fender/Guild owns is being discontinued......or risk ordering online.....I did and I won.....you might not......

I'm happy with my cheap Indonesian bass.........gibs
 
-Do a search (in the guitar ans basses forum/search titles only/keyword-bass). It seems most bass questions relate to guitarists needing a bass guitar for recording (and yes, you'll find mine in there as well).

-Buy second hand if you trust your judgement (or bring a friend along).

-Buy a fender Precission or Jazz bass (jazz more diverse/precission more 'in your face'). You wont be able to afford for your budget, a USA model but the standard (i.e. Mexico (note: not squier)). (I live in the UK so I don't know how much the prices are but it should be in that region).

For new basses, the Mexican Fenders are indeed among the top choices in that price range. Around $300 in the US, I believe. Top choice would also be the MTD Kingston basses which I believe can be had for just under $450 (like here, for instance). Yamaha BB series are well-made and inexpensive, but I have no idea what they might sound like recorded - of what I've heard from others, they are similar to Fender Jazz basses in sound.

(My weapon of choice right now is one of those cheap Fender Jazz basses, but that's just until I get money enough to lay hands on a custom-made instrument. :))
 
ive got a cheap mexico fender jazz 5 string and it hasnt dissapointed me yet... too bad it ways a ton though
 
I too was looking for a bass for recording. I tried the cheaper models, - Squire PBass, Yamaha,$150-$250 ...then I tried and liked the Fender Mex PB special, with the P-J pickup style. $450 my local GC. I also tried the MIA PBass, $950...clearly a better finish and feel...more polished and refined all around.

I also was interested in one of those DeArmond basses at SA. I even called SA to check stock...glad that I got out when I did...no sale!

I decided that the Fender Mex PBass special would do fine... Happened to find a Fender Hot Rod Pbass at Musicians Freind for $600..refurb. Snapped it up.

Though I shipped it ground, MF sent it 3-day Air( West coast to boston)...impressive!
The guitar arrived, not a blemish, Fender hard case and all the tags...and plays and sounds like a sweetheart, my wife says the guitar is just beautiful.

The point is, if you are a guitar player, you will always appreciate a decent bass - aim for a Mex Pbass atleast and enjoy...
