I use a Groove Tubes Ditto. Great sound like the instrument input on their Vipre.

ahhh you asshole!

now i want THAT one and only THAT one... you cost me 325 bones

...a JDI Radial ...Countryman ...or even the ART Tube MP (just don't use it for anything else!)

hmm...
I guess i need to fool around with it a lot more. I have a presonus blue tube and a behringer di100 or whatever. the behringer doesnt really seem to do anything and i get ALL OF THESE POPS and stuff whenever i go direct. I think maybe it's the inexperienced bassists? crappy basses? tell me what i need to do. thanks!

Demeter makes nice ones.... they're about $600-700 though.

I have a Little Labs IBP and Redeye, and an Avalon DI in my studio. The IBP gets the most use, the best DI I`ve ever used.....
And it`s got a couple quite useful features too.....

It somehow "sits" better in the mix, with a tighter , more focused low end, and a tad more aggressive midrange.

I haven`t got around to A/B IBP and Redeye yet.....

Countryman 85 for $150 sounds great and
is built like a truck -- you can run over it with
a truck. Actually, it sounds like a wire.
I usually run both the Countryman and thru
a tube amp miced with a RE-20.

Or use a preamp, like the FMR RNC? It is
probably too clean for that funky bass sound.

Dare I mention the Johnson J station? Amp modelling is frowned on by many, and I'd love a countryman for some stuff, but the bass amp models on the J do it for me. Home stuff, not pro, but I like them a lot, and the guitar models aren't bad either. I'd love to just mic up an SVT, but I don't quite have the cash (but all the critical guitar parts on the album I'm working on are done thru my brother's mesa V-twin and subway blues).

what's wrong with the bluetube as a DI? I use mine as a bass DI and it works real well...

you can get some real nice thick bass sounds by routing some signal through the toob; or some not-so-thick by keeping the toob out of the mix (use gain only, not drive)

I bought the whirlwind IMP2 for $25. I have my p bass-type with dimarzio pu's plugged into it then into my aardvark Q10 via xlr cable. (Note: My bass has a very nice tone to start with.)

I have been very happy with the sound. I have applied no eq in sonar, just running it flat!

Have not tried any of my active basses yet.

i use the direct out on my Ampeg SVT3 Pro when I track bass, and I think it sounds great. But I HATE lugging that thing through my house (rehearsal room to the recording room) evrytime I want to lay down a bass line. What's a good bass DI that is comparable to using my Ampeg head (that is much smaller)? A Sansamp? Thanks!

Sansamp Bass D.I rocks. You'll probably find one in almost every pro studio. $189.00 and now they make a rackmount with a few more features for around $299. They really do sound great with a good bass guitar. If your bass guitar sounds crappy, it'll probably sound crappy no matter what you run it through..
