I have a ibanez 500SG or whatever number they run, its a middle of the road bass, not bad a ART tube preamp and I am trying to get a nice full bass sound out of it and it always just sounds thin no matter how much I mess with the EQ. I cant really mic the bass cause I live in a apartment. Any suggestions, other than wait till the neighbors leave?

Thanks,
John

I a suggestion. Either get a POD for bass ($350), or get SansAmp Bass Driver Di ($190). The POD has cabnet simulations with effects (reverb, delay, etc.), while the SansAmp just simulates one style with no effects.

Yeah man, you should definatily look into an amp simulator of some type. Warning: Some amp sims sound incredible, while others are aweful. Don't be turned off if you try out a bad one. The only thing you will have trouble with recording direct is getting the picking sound, which is ususlly near impossible unless you mic it. Also, if you are recording digitally, try recording the bass to 2 tracks....then eq one or delay one track. Chorus on bass adds a little dept too.

Before you go out and buy more gear, let me see what I can do with it.

Post a high quality mp3 encoded at 192. Keep it down to 4 bars only !. Write the exact gear you are using and DONT ! do any processing of any kind.
No Compression or EQ or anything.

I tried my best....

Okay, I dont have computer recording software just my akai DPS so I recorded my set up without any effects, just the ART pre and the bass direct into my recording board. Then I transferred that recorded part into the computer via sound recorder (which sucks!) And I got this:
If you can look past the static you can hear the bass. If anyone knows how to get a sample from the akai to the computer Im open for suggestions!

Place a condensor at the neck/bridge area, and get that slappy sound at the same time with your direct sound, different tracks. Copy your direct sound to another track, and compress and EQ the living hell out of it, then bring the level up to where it fattens the original track up some. Add the mic'ed track to taste. Works for some setups. Try a good direct box if you are going direct.

The problem is your bass. Soundgears ARE "thin", and that's just about the nicest thing I have to say about them. You can't "fix in the mix" what isn't there from the beginning.

actually......

;) Trust me. Plug in a P-bass and notice the difference.

gotta agree

i got the ibanez sdgr300dx because:
1) my hands are smallish for bass and the neck is thin.
2) it came in left handed.

i like it but now i'm ready for something with some omph to it.

when i record it through my sansamp, i get some good definition, but it is most assuredly lacking in the bottom, and i'm not about to turn on the 'phat bass booster', cause that's just gonna make it worst.

of course, you've got to take my musings with a grain of salt, because i absolutely love the bass sound of those old paddle ore steinbergers. i've seen several old reggae bass players just funk a crowd to death with those things.
