I've been messing around with the presets on my KSP8, and I came across one called 'Bass Chorus'. I tried it out on a bass track, and it does on first listen have a pleasing effect. I record my bass direct, so I need something to give it more life. Is it a normal thing to put a bit of chorus on the bass? What do you all think of this?

I have never tried it but im sure ive heard it on some tracks before. If used im sure it will make the bass tone alot clearer and add some high end presence to it which could make it stand out in a mix alot easier rather than being burried in the high end.
I might try this in my next recordings.
I wouldnt use alot of chorus though, i would use it a little so it just brightens up the tone rather than sounding like an actuall moving chorus if you know what i mean.

yeah - it sounds good in moderation. I'll have to get used to it before I can decide if I really like it. Alot of stuff sounds good at first but doesn't age well.

This was done a lot in the 80s. Its still pretty common to use a bit on fretless.

This will work better with sparse arangements.

My recordings are pretty dense - but the bass is lacking some presence. The bass augmenting plugins I've tried all sound terrible - so maybe this is a solution. I'm also considering feeding the signal into an amp and micing it.

Yip definetly mic and DI the bass for more posibility of tone.

But dont forget that youll have a slight phase issue.

The di signal reaches the HD earlier than the mic signal does.

Phase issues = loss of bass.

Phase issues on bass gtr = Bummer situation.

Youll need to sync up the two tracks (di and mic) to get the full potential out of doing the dual method.

Yeah any time that i am using more than one mic or in this case mic and DI i always sync up the tracks so they are in exact line with each other. I even do it on the OH tracks by syncing the snare on the OHs to the snare track to get extra punch. Pro tools is real good for that as you can zoom right in so you get to the step just before the wave turns to digital blocks and then use the nudge function. Briliant and soo easy.

A bit off topic, but I just tried this syncing thing on a lead guitar track that has lots of bleed from the rhythm guitar. I aligned the waves so that the peaks and troughs exactly line up. The difference it made is INCREDIBLE. The rhythm guitar doesn't sound like it's going through a delay FX anymore.

I'm trying it on drums next...

By presence i am meaning cutting through the mix tone. Hi mids boost really. What are you meaning by presence?
