I know this is probably a basic recording question, but. Right now my buddy and I record two acoustics through some cheap microphone into cool edit pro. I then mix down the track from there. But what If I wanted an electric guitar in it? I went to the store and they told me about some midi device I could just plug my guitar into and play. Is this a viable option?

It would be better to play the guitar through your guitar amp and throw a mic about 1/2' out at the speaker edge pointing it towards the cone.

Yo Varsh,
Sounds like someone at the store is more interested in your money than your music, think about it. I can't say for sure but I'd be willing to bet that the midi device costs a whole lot more than a decent mic. In fact odds are that you can get several mics and some good boom stands which in the long run will probably prove to be far more beneficial to you than some device that will serve only one purpose. What you buy is up to you and your specific needs, just keep in mind that many salespeople work on commission so they are going to try to get you to spend as much as possible. My thinking says, if you really need it, buy it, if not you will just have another expensive piece of gear setting around collecting dust.

Just remember.....MIDI is NOT audio, it's a data protocol. You'll pull your hair out trying to figure out why you're not getting any sound from your electric gtr. If you want to use MIDI with your guitar, you'll need something like the Roland GK2A (or whatever the model number is....) MIDI pickup and a sound module, but even then, you won't be getting the real "tone" of an electric guitar. Best thing to do would be to go and get a good Audio interface and mic up the amp.
