My apology to all you mp3 pros who will find this a silly question.

Being new to mp3s, I'm just wondering if someone can give me an idea of the sound quality. How much sound degradation is there compared to the original (CD audio for instance)?

Thanks in advance.

Anything above a 190 kbps encoded mp3 and most people will not hear the difference in quality compared to the cd. Most mp3's on the net are encoded at 128 kbps and you can definetly hear the difference in quality..mainly in the low and high freq's. (The cymbals will start sounding harsh and the low will start to rumble.) Don't get me wrong, I have heard some decent sounding mp3's at 128. It makes a big difference in the software that u use to encode with.

Go ahead and rip a track of your favorite cd and convert it to an mp3 at 128 and check it out.

The Fraunhofer codec is considered to be about as good as it gets right now.

I always encode at 192kbs. You will find that it sounds pretty good at that rate. If you use 128kbs, make SURE you use a very good encoder. Even then, you will still hear some artifacts from the compression....:(

OOPS!

I thought I found a link, but it didn't work....

Anyone have a line on where to get it??

I've done many studies on compression methods, and you can find a brief synopsis of my recommendations at:

The link for the official Fraunhofer site is also listed in this post. Note that the Actual Fraunhofer MP3 codec is NOT free, and distribution of mp3's encoded with it has royalty based fees attached to it.
