Well if that works for a single coil what would it make a humbucker sound like mush??

Ok let me take it one step at a time what is a good rack for distortion???

Dioxide-

i don't want to come off sounding like a dick but the bands that you gave examples of have no clarity and no definition in the live setting. Ive seen every band you listed (except meshugga, and they are the only ones i like out of that list). Slipknot live was just one large wall of detuned noise when they played. Sloppy detuned noise, not anywhere close to what little definition they have on their albums in my opinion. Coal chamber's guitarist has the same problem, he might as well be playing bass through a distorted guitar amp. Korn's sound when i saw them live had alot more clarity than slipknot or coal chamber but when you play as slow as them and you only ride the top 3 strings CHUg..... chug.....chug ....bend a high note lol I can't see how it would be hard to get it to sound clean.
As i said before I love Meshugga but ive never had the pleasure of seeing them live. Somehow or another though, i bet those 8 string guitars are a bitch to get clarity in a live setting.
So whats my advice? If your taking cues from this "nu" school of metal EQ wise, start by putting some mids in your sound. It will help you cut through the mix and give you alot more clarity. Also roll off a good bit of the bass, it may sound weird to hear it this way by itself but youve got to remember your only 1 part of the mix, when everything comes together it will sound alot cleaner.

Wireneck........

No offence taken, everybody has there opinion and they are entitled to it. I'd hate for everybody to like the same things or I think music might really suck. You really oughtta see Meshuggah live, it's one mind blowing event. And suprisingly enough those 8 stringers sound amazing live. But then again there gear is totally clean. I've seen some of it and damn! (they also have the money to pull off equip like that.) Alright I admitt I havent seen Coal Chamber Live Nor Slipknot but I have seen Korn. As far as "nu" is concernd its all metal to me anyhoo maybey i'm looking for more of a Tool (best band I've seen live, as far as clarity) sound but still this isn't really going anywhere on rack processingI'd kinda like to get back on track. I appreciate the advice from everybody on which things to tweek but I'm also looking at gear here Thanx.

Personally, you might want to look into a Marshall TSL stack. For smaller venues you can hit the VPR button to lower your output a bit. The Peavey 5150 head mentioned earlier is actually a pretty decent head as well. However, I would actually put it on the Peavey cab, and not on a Marshall. The Marshall cab thins out the Peavey's sound to much and makes it sound unnatural to me.

I have worked with Meshugga a couple of times now. They do have good tone, but I don't remember seeing POD's as their main source of signal. What I do remember though was that the last time the console was a Yamah PM5D and there was a lot of Avalon in the outboard rack. The guitars were pretty heavily comped and EQ'ed which seriously changes the tone.

If you weren't playing lead, I would say look into a Mesa Boogie Dual or Triple Rectifier and cab, but leads seem to slice through much nicer on a Marshall without sounding "squeezed".

I demo'd a Mesa Triaxis Preamp in a guitar store once. It sounded pretty darn good to me. Plus all the midi features and such made it quite appealing to me. I didn;t get it however. Instead I quit the band I was in. Some time later I bought a Fender Blues Jr.. NOT at all what your looking for. I've always wanted a Soldano SLO too. Never heard it, I just want one. I'll stop rambling now.

1> MESA TRIAXIS
2> SOLDANO SLO
3> MARSHALL TSL
