Basic Home Studio

I have a Tascam 688, drum machine and my guitars. I have recorded 20 some songs on the machine. Raw and uncut. My question is, I see all these noise gates, compressors, etc out there. I would like to build a small studio that I can go into and hide from the world. What would a basic set up consist of? I love the Tascam so I am not gonna drop that and get the 8.1 Giga Slab of computer crap so I can sound like the garbage they have out today. I am an old Metal up yer Arse type of guy. Loud and Heavy. Can someone point me in the good direction...Thanks.....

Geez guy, sounds to me like you have what you need....You made it known that you knew the outboard stuff existed, but you didn't mention what kind of effect/affect you are looking for...Pandora's box can't hold all the stuff that can be recommended to you....

My guitar effects rack is a GSP2101 so it has all the effects I need for the guitar set up but do I need the rack mount EQ's and gates and limiters I see other poeple using when they mix down or should I just shut up and stick with what I got...Thanks
