basic bass recording question

Have ProQ10 use Nuendo - I want to Mic the bass and DI also -- If the bass amp/speaker has the bass cord going into the amp how can i go direct also?? i know it's probably a dumb question but ...... can any one help?

p.s. we tried "splitting the bass cord with a Y but it didn't work -- locosan

If your amp has a line out jack somewhere, chances are good you can use that to get a direct-ish signal to the board. Depending on the amp, it could be a balanced XLR, unbalanced 1/4" or perhaps you don't have one.

If you have a DI box (or a Direct Box, or "direct injection" box) which is the most popular method for studio and stage to get the signal direct to the pre/console, usually this gives you a line in (plug your ax in here) a Hi-Z line out (plug this into your bass amp) and a balanced Lo-Z out (use an XLR mic cable to go direct into your mic preamp).

Snow lizard - thanks - we have a Direct box that i've never tried using as i didn't think we needed it -- The Q10 already has preamps in the break out box and so cannot take a Line level XLR out to the q10 - so i'm still confused - i guess i'll look at it and check out all the in/outs on our DI -- Thanks locosan

DI boxes are made so that you can plug line level stuff into mic preamps. It has a matching transformer type deal that converts the high impedence unbalanced signal to low impedance balanced - like you'd have with a microphone. It also carries the original high impedance signal to the amp. You should be able to set the correct line level with the gain control on the mic pre.
