Basement Room Vs. My Garage: Advice On Better Recording For Live Bands??

I have a small, basement room setup for my home studio (sounds fairly well, actually). I also have a medium-sized garage if I chose to set my studio up there (like for live bands b ecause of more room). But I've heard that garages are so "bouncy" in sound that it's not worth it. Any advice about which one I should go with? Garage means more room for a live band, my basement room means a few instruments at a time and just use a drum machine. Of course, I could go that route or just record the live drummer in the garage so he isn't offended. But that involves two recording setups. Help!!

Plenty of people use their garages you just have to take the initiative and fix the acoustics of the room.
 
Yup...I built my room in my garage. A room within a room type deal. Insulated, peaked ceiling, bass traps etc.
Pretty decent sounding too.

If I had it to do over again, I'd build bigger. :mad:

Having done both basement and garage studios, I'd go with the garage if you can--if for no other reason than ceiling space. You will need to do some acoustic treatment of course but you can use that extra space to shape the room(s) and treat acoustically.

I found it difficult to get that cramped "basement" sound out of my old setup along with other issues--drop ceiling which hanged too low, carpet on 100% of the floor, every bass note can be heard upstairs, furnace sound gets into recording, etc. All of these issues can be addressed and resolved, hower, given a choice I'd prefer the higher ceilings and blank slate of a garage as a starting point.

All that said, there's no reason you can't make a basement setup work for you if it ends up being your preference.
