I am looking for an interface that can connect to my computer at 24/96. The main catch is that when i upgrade i want to be able to keep this as a center piece. That way i can move on up in the preamp section and still have the interface. All i need it for now is a small project that won't be recording more than two channels at the same time. However, later i will upgrade my computer and record bands etc. Any ideas on anything close to the $300 range(can be RCA inputs/out)? I am just not sure what i really need to start with to record into my computer, but i do know that i need to be able to update around it.

If what you're saying is that you want a sound card that you will be able to keep, even as you upgrade your other components, my guess would be that you're gonna want something like an M-Audio Delta 1010. This will give you 8 analog ins, which is probably the minimum you would need if you plan on recording bands (unless you plan on doing only live stereo mixes). I believe that you can connect multiple 1010's for more channels, so this would give you an upgrade path without abandoning your previous investment. There are many 1010 users on this forum who could help you in this area. If you're just starting out, I would recommend thinking twice about your plan, though. Although the 1010 is by no means the most expensive interface, it's still a good chunk of change for someone who hasn't even gotten their feet wet to know if this is something they really want to do. Also, technology continually advances, so by the time you're ready to record bands, the standard might be 48/192, or who knows what, and your interface won't be able to cut it. But if you've got the cash and you're determined, go for it. I just hate to see people waste money (probably because I have so little to waste.) All I'm saying is think it through.

thanks

thanks... yeah, I understand what you're saying. Instead of going too big, I am going to buy the Delta 1010 LT. Its got a good number of inputs, so I can track drums and have a scratch guitar track at the same time. Also, its not too much money, so as you said, I can keep up with the latest. These days keeping up is all you can unless you're at the top... thanks again!

the 1010lt has unbalanced -10Db rca connectors. Not a great solution if you have long cable runs

How long is "long?"
