Alright then. I've been posting on this bbs for about a year and a half now, lecturing people on loudspeakers and acoustics, pissing a few off with my rationalist approach to audio, learning a whole bunch from you fine folks, and having a lot of fun.

Now it's time to stop all the audio talk, post an mp3, and really start learning how to mix music.

So far I've been mixing my stuff to be played on the dance floor, through a specific PA system. Everyone says it sounds good. But what about more experiences listeners, and what if I ever want to press it to disc? Therefore I submit this for your critical ears.

Slam my mix, style, or whatever. Have no mercy. I can take it. But, pointers will be most appreciated.:)

Not exactly my cup of tea as far as style, but it is a very good production....very slick.....

i think the arrangement could use a little variation thrown in here and there as it never really strays from that basic groove....

i definitely think it could be the soundtrack of this dream i had last night....it was pretty wierd and involved farm animals, underage girls, carrots,a bowl of oatmeal, a shop vac, and various kitchen utinsils......

now i see the latter half of the longer clip has some variations like i was talking about...i would have liked to see a little more of than done sooner to keep me into it......

Thanks for the feedback Gidge. :)

"very good production"... "very slick" I'll take that. :D

Yeah, think if I were to make it a relatively short track on a compilation disc, I would throw the variations in more quickly. But this mix is really intended for parties. Deep, moody dance music for the dedicated crowd. I want it to evolve slowly. The whole tune is actually over 8 minutes long, but I can only upload 5MB at a time to geocities. I'm working on a nowhereradio.com membership.

Underage girls and paraphernalia... unfortunately only works in our dreams. Glad I could set the mood though. :)

Thanks!

Well, it's MY cup of tea so fill 'er up and please leave room for cream!

Barefoot, nice work man. Very deep, funky, good groove. A little more variation would be great. Maybe a filter or two here and there. Maybe a total break in the music with just some of the background voices going. Not too much! Just a sprinkling.

Kind of reminded me of some of the new Deep Dish stuff. If you don't know them, then do your self a favor and check 'em out! It's not exactly the same but this reminded me in a way of their new disc.

You doing all of this in Acid? Are you making your own loops, using a library? Where do you go with this stuff. Do you mix it into a new track? Are you basically doing live DJ with Acid?

I liked the sample of the kid talking. Had no idea what it was saying but it was cool.

Good freakin' job, man.

Peace,
Lunatic

Although this kind of song might find it's proper home on a dancefloor at 3:00 AM, I found it very enjoyable at 12:00 PM over a turkey burger while gazing into the midwest blue...

I'm not a huge trance fan but I liked this. Sounds really nice.

Lunatic,
Glad you like and thanks for the compliments.:)

One of the sounds has a resonant filter on it and I do tweak it real time while I'm "performing" (more on that later). Someone suggested adding vocals to add a bit more variation. I was going to try and blend in some really ethereal samples from Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil). Think that might work?

Yes, I've heard their stuff, but I'm not that familiar. I'm not really into House very much, but I can occasionally dig the deep stuff. I'll have to give their new one a listen.

"You doing all of this in Acid? "
Yes

"Are you making your own loops, using a library? "
I do create some bass and drum sounds with Stomper, but most everything I use is sampled. I pull them from everywhere...CD's, vinyl, web, disc libraries, etc... mostly CD's.

"Where do you go with this stuff. Do you mix it into a new track? Are you basically doing live DJ with Acid?"
I play parties mainly. My friend has a big graphic design studio which about once a month reincarnates as a party venue. I work directly from Acid. I usually have about 3 windows running. 2 to switch between mixes and one to add spontaneous loops and effects. Recently I've been working in quadraphonic, adding ambience tracks and doing spatial effects. I want to make deep music even deeper by submersing people in sound.

" I liked the sample of the kid talking. Had no idea what it was saying but it was cool. "
That "it" was my 2yr old daughter.;) She's saying "Children, children, what do you see?" She says many things right now that only her mother and I can understand, but her voice does sound cool doesn't it?

rats,
Thanks. Yeah, I'm not a big Trance fan either. Recently, though, a friend gave me a copy of Saafi Brothers "Mystic Cigarettes". Deep, downtempo trance.... just amazing. It got me totally inspired to come up with this mix.... deep trance, but with breakbeat rhythms to tap the groovy bone. :)

I really like the way this sounds. Very good drum samples, very "slick" ambience.

I dont see any situation where I would actually sit down and listen to this kind of music, but those who listen to it will get a nice thrill

nice stuff, barefoot. I actually like to listen to this kind of stuff when I go to bed...and that's a compliment!! I really like synth/electronica...is this is nice stuff. ..doesn't *eat away* at your brain...nice and mellow. The groove does go on for quite awhile...and it is good that it is a decent one. I have ACID too...but never really use it. I can see how composing this style of music would really lend itself to ACID. My only complaint....it's just basically a groove with sound effects over it....which I like....but composition(ally), it lacks. It's fun to get a repetitive foundation going and add wierdness....but that's what it really is in the end....hence...that's why it helps me to go to sleep!!:D no wierd chord changes and unexpected tempo changes, off beat meters, and stuff like that to disturb my beauty rest.

very coooool

not really my cup-o-tea either, HOWEVER . . .

very cool mix. i'd encourage you to add more of the subtle variations up front as well. :) i listened to just the first minute or so, stopped it (thinking that that was pretty much the jist of it) then read one of the following posts. so, i went back to listen again and got the 'storage error' message. anyway, i followed your updated link to listen again. very cool. i really like the 'children, children . . .' section. (maybe that's because i also have an almost-2 year old daughter. :)) i do like the overall mood in the mix, though. very cool. nice work!! :D

okay, i'm back yet again.

also, i forgot to mention this earlier today in my previous post. i think that if you added some more industrial sounding samples in there...you'd have a pretty sweet soundtrack for 'perfect dark'. :) (it would be killer - excuse the pun - for the multiplayer mode. lol)
