Bare bones acoustic tune up... NT2, Meek and me

Hey guys, I just recently put up my newest song. I wrote the song about a week and a half ago and recorded it pretty quickly. I thought about doing a deeper arrangement, but for some reason, this song seemed to just need the song, and nothing else. Many of the people who have heard it agree it is more effective and intense as is. Others have said it could use some help along. Others think it's too long. lol For the most part though, I've gotten great feedback on the tune, and I'm pretty happy with it.

The song is "Gladiolas."

The song itself should be pretty powerful. Some friends in England have said it's especially poignant there now, because of recent events in the news. Sucks.

The guitar and voice were both recorded into Vegas on a Rode NT2 through a Joe Meek VC3. I've found the Meek to color the sound too much sometimes, but other times it works just right. The guitar track was copied and panned left and right, with the right being dragged a little. (I didn't use a delay, just manually dragged the wav a little. )

Anyway... let me know what you think of the recording, and definitely of the song.

Jeeze what a good sound...sometimes less is more, to use the usual cliche....vocal very powerful, guitar very strong...obviously this microphone does what it should......long, depressing yet thought provoking song...I don't like long songs, but the good sound and the lyrics kept me into it nicely...gibs

I was surprised when I recorded the song, because it didn't feel like one of my long songs. Seems to move pretty well even though it's long and depressing.

Got a beauty here buddy. IF I was to
elaborate on the production, this is what I'd add. 1. brushes on a snare drum..that's it for percussion. 2. expressive fretless bass 3. slide acoustic guitar

But it is nice as is too. Nice job.

To sum this song up, it sounds like what you would get if you put the Bob Dylan and Joe Cocker together into one voice.
The song was well-written and arranged, and the recording sounded great. I dig that "Meek" sound. The guitar sounded kind of like Jimmy Page, especially when you picked up the tempo. It had that "Gallows Pole" feeling... it also made me think of the acoustic intro from Tommy.
The most important thing is that this song has is a "real" feel to it.
(Hence, the Page/Townshend comparisons)
Nothing pretentious or fake about it, just honest emotion.

I think you'd dig Mark Curry. The clear falsetto in spots was a great contrast. I swear on the last "cry", I sang the exact same thing on the very first listen. I was laughing out loud that your vocal did it too.

I was definitely going for the "real" sound you talked about Buck. There's a couple parts where the strum is almost off and not quite right, but I think it gives it the very live feel I was looking for.

Ric, those instrument ideas are all solid and I could hear that working really effectively. I may do more with it at some point, but I am not sure.

I think you could be right about the influences you metioned Buck. That descending bass on the guitar line toward the end is a take off on a pretty cliche riff, but it's effective. Offhand the only song I can think of that's similar is "Can't Find My Way Home" (thought a different key), but I am sure there are others... lol

Oh yeah.. Maybe "Dear Prudence" too.
