Hi,
new at recording but want to get something set up where i can
record my band on seperate tracks (4-8) and for the least money
possible. ;)
Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Before you buy anything, spend a few months reading this bulletin board to get an idea of what your getting into. Read the newbie, recording techniques and the mixing/mastering forums. Cost? Free, and then you may be able to make somewhat of an informed choice about the direction you want to head.

yea you shoudl learn more about recording i have been reading these forums for about 4 or 5 days now and i no nothing about recording i have learned alot from the forums though

Yes, i agree with NYMorningstar, theres many routes to go with recording. And the more you get into it, the more options that become apparent. I suggest looking into computer recording also, those workstations are good, handy even. But i've had better quality using computer recording for the same, if less price.

Browse this forum, check out what other people have done, etc... Its all helpful

Ok, so i'm thinking of getting this mixer,
and then hooking it up to my computer's line-in,
but what kind of software will i need? I've got a free app called
Audacity i use for producing tracks, will that work?

Let me get this straight.

You ask for advice, then ignore it?

The consensus here is to look before you leap into any purchase that may prove costly.

Do whatever you want --- just don't ask us for any more advice.

Give him a break, he wants to get stuck in!

Spend whatever money you want to, but I would definitely suggest looking around first. If you want to just get stuck in and learn from your own mistakes - that's a great way to do it... It's just quite expensive if you buy the wrong gear.

Start with an M-Audio Delta1010LT soundcard. Find a mixer (im looking for one myself, so I can't help you with that), get some budget mikes (a few suggestions below), and plug it all into Cubase - this will sound shit at first, but you will learn why and fix as you go.

Microphones:
Assuming your band is the general rock set-up, you're gonna need to mic up a drumkit, guitar amps, bass amp, and record some vocals.

Drumkit - If your drums and room sound nice to your ears, just buy a Large Diaphragm Condenser and use that - it's not the pro way to do it, but there's no reason why you can't.

Guitars - The standard is the good old SM57, but I'd suggest splashing out a bit on an AKG C3000B, 'coz they ROCK on guitar amps.

Bass - Any dynamic mic with decent low end will do, or alternatively get a DI box and sod the amp - again, will sound like piss but it's a start.

Vocals - You know the LDC i told you buy? Use that with a home-made popshield to record vocals.

I hope I've been some help, if not then I have at least stalled my boredom for a bit :)

LOL.

You are a much more tolerant soul than I, Mr. Bear.
