Here is a band i recently recorded. Please give me some feedback if you have time. It was done on some limited gear so the best i hoped to get is just a good amature demo.

THis was recorded on a boss BR-1600. Drums were recorded live with d112 kick, sm57's on snares and toms, sure ksm27's for overheads. No gates or any outboard gear just the mics plugged right into the Bosses preamp xlr inputs.

vocals - shure ksm27
guitars - all direct through the boss unit.
Bass - a mix of a sans amp bass driver DI box and a digitech bass multieffects pedal with modeling.

keep in mind i have no grand illusion of getting a professional recording with my equipment, but a good clear mix is the goal.

Roast away :) here is the link. thanks.

This is a good example that the equipment is only a part of the equation. You need a good source and it sounds like you obviously have been blessed with one. They're no Alice in Chains and the singer is no Layne Staley but they are damn close and you've captured what they have real well. Great job dude! This is presented and mixed well and doesn't sound processed at all. I'm betting you didn't do much to this anyhow.

I like it... not an expert on drums but I'll low the snare a bit, it has too much "pressence" in the mix.

yeah it sounds pretty good overall, the only things that stood out to me were the drums. The drummer kind of speeds up and slows down, especially in the fills, but thats not a recording or production thing, thats performance which you didnt ask for a critique on. As someone else said, i would lower the snare volume a bit. it seems like its missing some low end, there isnt much low end to it. Overall i like it alot though, the guitars especially sound perfect.

Since this is my favorite band of all times, I wont comment much on the performance (I have heard and played this song a billion times :D )

I will say, however, the mix sounds really good, great job. The guitar sounds great, nice tone and nice solo.

I agree with the above posters about the drums. Seems to speed up and slow down in parts.

Overall, great job, I love AIC and appreciate anyone who tries to cover them. :)

I've listened to it about 5 times. Its great, HR.

Its above average HR. far above average HR...imo.

I always loved that song too.

Those are seriously nice results dude. I beyong impressed with the quality of your recording.

Yeah metalj, blows our recording quality away. I like the kick sound through my stereo and studio monitor headphones. Actually I like all of it! I really can't comment on the snare other than it has a certain sound and I like it WELL for this song. I'm a drummer so any prominent drum that isn't overly out front is cool by me :-) Any comment metalj on mike quantity and placement on the snare? We did a test record of my snare yesterday and it sounded like crap with just an SM 57 two inches off the head. Add the overheads and it came alive!!!

Hell this is nice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're singer should replace the singer so alice in chains continues makin great grunge hits ! The only thing that doesn't sound perfect to me is the drum, bet hey recording drum is a real pain in the ass and god it's expensive.

The snare drum was miced 2 times each with a sm57. One on top about 2-3 inches off the head and pointed towards the center of the snare and pointed almost the opposite direction of the the high hat(less bleed). one coming up from the bottom of the snares pointing at the center of the head and about 2-3 inches off the bottom head. then blend whatever mix sounds good to you. the top mic gave more body, while the bottom mic provided more snap, crackle and pop.

I gotta say i personally think the snare this drummer has was crap sounding. I had to EQ the snot out of it to get it to sound good. I sent the snare through multiple phases of EQing. here is the eq settings i used to get a decent sound....

bottom snare mic +15 gain at 5k with a Q of .8
+15 gain at 840hz with a Q of .8
-30 gain at 60hz (sucks out the bleed of the kick and toms)with a Q of 3.1
+5 gain at 8K with a Q of 1.

Top Snare mic +5 at 8K with a Q if 1,
+9 at 5300hz with a Q of 16
+3 at 100hz with a Q of 1
-10 at 60hz with a Q of 16

I used the overhead mics only for cymbols since i was recording in a room with low ceilings(no room ambience), and had to had them pretty far away from the kit so they only picked up just enough of the cymbols and not as much as the rest of the kit.

Sounds pretty good - I dug the overall vibe of the song.
Very true to the original.
