I've got a couple of mics I want to use for mid/side recording but they have significanlty different sensitivities. In fact the cardioid spec is 20mV/pa and the bi-directional is 15mV/pa but the difference seems quite a bit more in practice.

Could I use these two mics in mid/side by balancing them with their preamp gains, or would it be better to buy another mic, either cardi or bi-, which matches the other's sensitivity?

You could set them both to cardioid...set their gains...then switch the one to Side and leave it as-is.

There's always going to be a difference between Mid and Side, even with identical mics.

I'd say record both mics at reasonable levels
Since the whole benefit of M/S recoding is that you can widen or narrow the image by messing with the relationship of the mid to side levels, I'd imagine your going to be playing with the levels quite a lot once you have them recorded anyway
