How can I tell if my xlr cable is balanced? I have a Proline Professional Microphone cable. The packaging doesn't say either balanced or unbalanced. I can't find the cable on the net.

allen ,,
does your mic have 3 terminals on it ?
if it does and your mic cable matches to plug the mic into ..
then your cable is probably balanced.
you can always take the cable to a store and they will have a cable tester
in their tech dept.

If the cable has 2 xlr ends on it it is balance. If it has one xlr end and the other end is a tip/ring/sleeve end it is balanced. If the other is is just tip/sleeve then it is unbalanced. What you need to beware of is there are many products on the market that add XLR connectors to an internal single-ended circuit. Such designs don't process the signal in balanced form.

One end is male 3 prong the other end is female 3...xlr

it's safe to assume it is balanced as long as the wires aren't shorted to one another inside the cable. open up one end of it and check the colors that are connected to the pins. for example White might be connected to pin 3, red to pin 2 and the ground connected to pin1. make sure the other side of the cable has corresponding colors on the same pins.

it's techincally possible for a company to sells unbalanced cable, but not common. you can also use a DMM to check the cable to see if it's wired properly.

Thanks everyone, I think it's balanced then
