My control room out jacks are balanced out and my input jacks on my monitors - TR8's - are balanced in. Unfortunately I bought 1/4" unbalanced guitar jacks and just plugged them in. The sound is ok, but I would like to know, before I buy more cables will there be any noticeable difference in sound using balanced cables? If yes, can you explain why?

i just did this. i didn't notice any difference in sound from my monitors and i spent $30 on 2qty 1/4" to XLR balanced. I first had the 1/4" standard two wire.

Technically, the balanced has the noise reduction factor which cancels noise.

My Joe Meek manual mentions its all balanced too, as most pro setups are. but it also says if the lines/cables are less than 50ft....either is ok.

I went ahead and did the balanced and spent the $$, but there wasn't this HUGE improvement (i didn't notice anything at all actually). I can only imagine with pros, they have 100x's the equipment and cables all going everywhere....I have about 3qty cables. :D

just 2 cents..

yeah it will only make a difference if you have tons of cables going everywhere, or the unbalanced line goes over something that is emitting stuff like a power lead for example
