Is there time when i should use balanced instead of unbalanced, like out of a compressor or mic pre. Im kinda confused, could you use an balanced cord out of a guitar. Can a balanced cord be used ever where.

No. The biggest use for balanced line cables are for microphones. Not the mics you buy for $29.99 at RatShack.

Instrument cables are rarely if ever balanced. Balanced cables are also used in professional level (and sometimes semi-pro) signal transfer from a console to a recorder. Patchbays also sometimes have balanced in's and out's. It helps if all of the equipment plugged into it is balanced as well, otherwise it creates headaches.

Balanced cables can also be ran a lot farther than unbalanced lines before picking up inducted noise. The next concert you attend, take a look at how far the house and monitor desk's are from the stage. All of those lines are balanced.

Nice explanation!

I get tangled up in phase / polarity too. This stuff should be on the main site!
