Hi guys, I know If I read on(which I am doing) some of my question will be explained, but I am still posting for it's urgent to me to get some feedback :)
Tonight my band(2 guitars, bass and drums) tried to do some recording with my PC.. Cakewalk(going to that category in a sec) Sonar to be exact and had a hard time getting things synched up for the parts?! It a real steady punk rockish tune were were trying to track and just had a bad time figuring out the right thing to listen to while playing your part and who first etc.. We tried drums first then the lead guitarist wanted to track his part I guess.. I wanted to do drums bass guitars vocs. ANyone have nay input? This was a very straining experience and I would Love for some advice.. not necessarily a solution.. BTW, we were using a set of sony headphones on the drummer and guitarist while they wre either listening to a refference track we had just recorded.. Anyone? Thanks in advance! Please?! :)

I AM NO PRO BUT GENERALLY HERE'S WHAT I WOULD DO-
DETERMINE YOUR TEMPO USING THE METRONOME,
AND RECORD A CLICK TRACK, USUALLY
VOCALS AND GUITAR,
MAYBE BASS, DEPENDS,
ANYWAY YOU DO NOT KEEP THIS TRACK/TRACKS, UNLESS YOU GET SOME OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE YOU CANNOT DUPLICATE,
THEN HAVE YOUR RHYTHM SECTION BASS, DRUMS, WHATEVER PLAY TO THIS, THIS ALLOWS YOU TO PLAY TO THE DYNAMICS OF THE COMPOSITION, PLACING EMPHASIS, FILLS, ECT. WHERE THEY NEED TO BE,
GET THE RHYTHM, THEN COME BACK WITH VOCALS AND LEAD-
REMEMBER YOU CAN SAVE DIFFERENT TAKES, USUALLY I JUST GET A BUNCH OF AUDIO TRACKS AND THEN DRAG A TAKE TO A MUTED
AUDIO TRACK AND COMPARE THEM LATER.
I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Thanks Catfish.. We'll definitely give that a try.. I tried tracking just my rhythm guitar to the click then have the drummer track to that.. not coming out good.. my rhythm part was throwing his sense of the song off a bit.. We'll be trying again tonight and tomorrow! Hopefully we get a few good takes of Something!! Thanks again..

I'm taking a guess here that you can only track two tracks at a time. If so start with the drums. Then bass. These are going to be the most important elements and they HAVE to lock up. Drums first because if he's not steady everything else is going to stink on ice no matter what. YMMV.

Why not record the band as a whole. Use the best performance as the track the drummer and the bass player can play to. When those tracks are done, let everyone else do their thing to the drumms and bass.

well we tried that.. Either the track we recorded for reference was being played back loudly enough or the temp varied enough to throw off the drummer when he was trying to track to it.. Or he just didn't have enough tries at it.. I think we got it now.. just have to clean up the tracks a bit.. It sounds sloppy in a couple parts adn the vocals, being done seperately, are kinda dry sounding and uninspired.. We're gettin there tho.. Thanks guys.. Keep it coming..

Hey be patient with the drummer when you are asking him to play to a click track. It requires a lot of practice, so be patient :):)

cheers
John
