Hello, I just picked up a presonus firebox and a shure sm7b mic, and although I love the sound of the mic, it is very low output and whenever I try to record with it I have to turn the preamps up too their highest level, and I get this awful noise. I know the mic isn't picking up any noise from the computer, so I think it must be the firebox or my actual computer making the noise internally. Does anyone have any suggestions?

here is a clip so you can hear the noise:

On the Firebox control panel you can give the mic and line channels a 12db boost by checking the box. This may help.

I hear an awful noise whenever I sing into any of my mics.

Try disconnecting the mic from the preamp/recording console. That may help. :D

I've got a firepod and an sm7b. I listened to you clip (albeit just on my comp. speakers) but I'm not hearing any obvious noise? With my setup I have to crank the gain to about one click from max, but it sounds good with little noise.

However, I have encountered a periodic crazy loud annoying digital distortion from the firepod. It took me a while, but I figured out how to get rid of it - maybe these tips would help you too?

a) Don't try to record/playback to a firewire hardrive while you've got the presonus running. Use an internal drive or a usb-2 drive. The presonus seems to not play well with other fw devices.

b) turn off networking (especially wireless) - this made a huge difference

c) play around with the buffer settings and you might have to go higher than you'd think- I think I'm running something like 10ms latency at 44.1, and this is on p1.6m laptop w/ 1 gig o' ram.
