Alright when i bought my recording stuff last year i was dumb and bought the CAD 7 drum mic package. MY recordings sound like crap! How much are those horrible mics hurting my recordings?

Great mics will help things along, for sure...but first, can you be sure that you're not getting any phase problems with your current setup? Eliminating phase problems will go a long way in helping you get the best drum sound you can with your current (or future) gear.

I bought that same package awhile back. They're not the best but I'm still content with them for now. What pre amps are you using?

Take 'er easy,..

Is there any way you can post an mp3 sample so we can hear what they sound like? It's more likely to be 'user error' (phase and less than brilliant placement) or room than equipment ... just be careful about shelling out all over before you have exhausted all other possibilities for improvement!!!

There are people with good ears here so give us a 20 second clip and we can talk.:)

Might also be preamps, tuning, playing style along with the other suggestions. 'Cause what sounds good at your position, tuning and playing wise, doesn't always sound good everywhere else, and even if it sounds bad to you while playing, it may sound brilliant miced/to everyone else. Try different mic placements, tunings and playing styles. After that try different preamps, monitors, rooms, and anything else you can think of. If after all that it still sounds bad then get new mics. I get good results in my opinion with the terrible equipment/room/drums i use, and i don't know how.

well, i mean i am not getting a fat drum sound, they dont sound full, if you know what i mean? i am not using any pre amps, i am just going directly to my alesis multimix 16 mixer.

also what are phase problems

this is a recording i did yesterday and i used a MXL condenser and a digital reference one, they arent great but i am still getting the same sound.

there are preamps on the mixer it doesnt sound all that bad for using those mics, are you using any eq or any other effects careful eq on all the mics could help alot in this case

i also noticed that the guitars sound rather muffled not just the drums, and when you say you used a mxl and a reference is that in addition to the cad mics

well i didnt mic the toms, i used the CAD bas mic and Snare mic, cause i lent my 57 to my friend, and i used the digital and MXL for overheads.

The thing is my drums dont sound like full to me, they are really trebble-y to my, like not good, i dont know if that mixing, or mics, or a combination?

But is that all i can expect from mics of that price range?

sounds more like the drums are sitting in the mid range, really boxy and muffled, not much highs or lows, what mxl and what digital reference mix are you using
