I think I may have too much compression on the melody guitar.I EQd the bottom -10 dB at 125 Hz and rolled off the highs 6 dB over 1200 Hz.The rhythm bed is midi except for rhythm guitar,so I'm really interested most in how the guitar seems to sit in the mix on your speakers.

the rhythm guitar fits great........the lead sounds good, but doesn't sit as well.....very jazzy.......it sounds like mostly a volume issue if anything, i think it could go down in volume a bit to sit better.........

Nice chords! Just what I need to start my day. Smooth. Makes me want to dance with my girlfriend around my "studio" room.

Everything seems to be sitting pretty nicely on my monitors. Very nice lead playing BTW.

I hear nothing that screams "fix me" here. Tastefully recorded and performed! I like the change up around 4:30. I don't like the way it drops at the end. I'd like a nice dim7 chord sustained there or something. But that's nitpicking.

Thanks for the tune.

Thanks for the suggestions. You guys hit two of the things bothering me right on the head.
powderfinger-Not only did I think the melody was too loud, there was too much low freq boom happening. On the signature lick (Bb-G-D) The D always sounded too strong to me.I moved my low roll off point up from 100 to 200 Hz on that track and backed off the faders a little over a dB.
Tom-I did a longer fade and reinserted the vibraphone tag ending.I also compressed the entire mix less so its got a bit more dynamic range.
I reposted the new mix to the original link.

it sounds better...........i don't know what else to suggest........good mix

Mr. Hicks:

Turn your vocal up (and don't put any effect on it when you do!!:D).

Seriously, this sounds great. I'm gathering from the "Cowtown" reference that you're in Fort Worth. Your jazz-ish influences didn't come from Fort Worth though, right? Who do you listen to? What radio stations. What's your wife's maiden name?

Okay, perhaps I'm getting a tad too personal.

This sounds absolutely great...I couldn't offer help, but I like to type.

THANK YOU FOR THIS,
-chris

Hi Chris
Mr. Hicks is my dad,so call me Tom,please.Thank you for your kind words.Yes,indeedy,I am in Ft Worth near the TCU area.I see by your location info that you are a neighbor. My experience base is primarily playing in rock bands, but I am getting into a jazz thing lately.Stylistically,I like horn guys like Bird Parker and Trane with their long, flowing lines. That is the feel I am trying for when I improvise.

nice playing. what does your guitar rig consist of?
I've always loved that tune. I'm on a big jazz kick right now. In particularly Jobim style stuff. Now if I could only kroon.....

Awwwwhhhhhhhh hell!

I think the performance is beyond my question for sure!!!!

A tid bit of real life,,,,,,,,,,,I was downloading your tune and I ran upstairs, in this loose acoutic dwelling of mine, to make sure my baked cod dinner wasn't getting overdone (it happens sooo fast) and I heard this tasty, reserved and playfull jazz thang from somewhere. It took me a sec to realize that it was your song, downloaded and playing!,............We always have good music playing in the house (minus when I'm mixing on the monitors:eek: :o ) so, I needed a slice of fermentation to put you and the song together.

In short, nice work.

I think you could make the git blend with the backround by easing up on those mids and giving the ground back to the highs as far as eq goes. Maybe shave a tad off the fader of the "lead/melody" to make it blend more and renounce any exteriour thought of showmanship but........WTFDIK....

Cool ass exit..........

Theron.

i can't help, but i alway's like your stuff!!!! very warm and clean!!

thank's man

Thanks guys for taking the time to listen and comment.
JR#97-the guitar for this tune was an '83 American Standard Strat through a Johnson J-Station via S/PDIF into the daughtercard of my C-Port at 24 bit,44.1K.
theron-kind words indeed.I think I have remixed and reposted this tune 5 or 6 times so far this weekend, including re-EQing the melody guitar and eliminating the rhythm guitar (which completely changed the feel of the mix).
Rick-Thanks man.Although I'm a longtime Texan,I lived in Atlanta before (where my dad still lives). You can keep the humidity, though!
