Back after 2 year break - new recording!

Hello folks! Long time, no see. Lots of new faces!

Last time I was here was in Aug of 2003... I took a break from the board mostly because my wife was going through a hard pregnancy with our daughter, Abby. Right after I left this (and many other) boards, I penned a tune for her. I played what I had of it back through cans on Mommy's tummy, and I wanted it to be the first song she ever heard. Well, I didn't finish it up totally by B-Day, but I did play what I had, and it was really magical, she stopped crying, and listened to the whole thing. Then, she cried again. Maybe that was a sign. :)

Anyway, after almost two years of divine kid-raising (MAN, is she a hoot!) I FINALLY finished it a couple of days ago, after recruting world Fingerstyle guitar champion Pete Huttlinger to put down two terrific guitar solos!

The song is called Abby, and can be heard at my Artistlaunch site:

I'm playing everything except the guitar solos; Drums are a Roland V-stage, bass is my 1983 Peavey Foundation, direct plug, no effects. Keys are a Korg Triton 61 and Roland RD-500 piano. Rhythm guitar is a Mexican Strat. Recorded into a Korg D1600, all tracks exported untouched to Adobe Audition, mixed and mastered there, using Waves and native Audition plugins.

So, whattya think? :)

Thanks in advance!!

Can't get your page to open for some reason, so I went to Pete Huttlinger's page to hear him and man he's good. Can't wait to hear your tune. Will try again shortly.

Try http://www.abbytraynor.com, I have a hotlink to the hifi stream on my little girl's site...

Pete just called me a moment ago, he finished up the guitar work for another piece of mine; I hope to have that one mixed down in a day or so...

No luck. Maybe the artistlaunch site is down, or there's something about my laptop that's causing a problem for me, but neither way in is loading. Your daughter's site is cute though. I'll try later.

Huh, weird. Popping right open for me, though it is sometimes sluggish over there.... Oh, well. Thanks!!

Hey, I've got it. Listening now. Very sweet and relaxing. When the guitar solos come in they're superb.

Thanks very much! he's really a wizard; humbling to work with him!

This is a truly fine piece of music, marvelous playing, and an excellent recording. I'm smiling as I listen. (Maybe partly because my own Abby will be 4 tomorrow!)

My only complaint (a nit, really) is that the drums sound a bit sterile. They remind me of that Roger Nichols contraption, WENDEL. (You could take that remark as a compliment.) I think I'd prefer to hear a bit more ambience.

Really small nit: There seems to be a lot of hiss at the very beginning, before the first note. It's probably under the whole track, but if you were to slience the hiss at the beginning, it would not be noticeable at all. You have to zoom in really close with a wave editor to do this effectively.

Great job!

Don

Thanks Don!

Yeah, I can probably zoom in a little closer. I was just excited to get the mix live... :) As to the sterility of the drums, they are a Roland V-Stage kit, so the recordign clarity you gain comes at a cost of warmth. My tube compressor is down, I usually run it through that, it warms it up nicely. But, being associated with Nichols in any way could certainly be construed as a compliment! :D

Thanks again though, I appreciate the listen, and the feedback!

And happy birthday to your Abby from mine! (she turns 2 in October)

She had a great day! Here's a pic of her blowing out her candles....
