Bongolation, I guess the one I posted must be a close relative of the one you just mentioned, now I think about it, roots and 5ths on as many strings as possible. You could make the Rainbow G I mentioned into a six stringer by fretting the 6th string on the 3rd fret with your thumb, I guess. Definitely ones for the Les Paul and the Marshall stack ;)

I play this one alot...

That's an Aadd9. It shouldn't be too difficult to use. You could substitute it for a I chord in A or a IV chord in E. The second instance is probably the most likely.

You're absolutely right Beag, I realised after I'd posted it was a power chord.

The song I referred to was a huge early '80s (?) hit for Rainbow, which was some of the ex Deep Purple guys, I think. David Coverdale? I am sure somebody will correct me.

that would be richie blackmore, you are corrected

and Graham Bonnett not Coverdale! ....you are further corrected :D

I saw a book that I want to go find and get. It was about open string chords. For every chord it had about ten voicings up and down the neck with open strings involved- very cool!

I like this one...

Those kinds of chords are really the acid test for your guitar's intonation, and you usually fail, but if you tweak them into tune they can be impressive.

I haven't used a barre chord in ages. I need those open-string voicings, and I'll use a capo if I have to to transpose keys. As a songwriter, I'm finding I need to use guitar more like piano, and that means some pretty spread-out, complex chords.

But...why do you need a book for this? Just get a fretboard chart and build your own wack chords. The next thing you know, you've learned the fretboard and a lot of theory.

Yes these are 6/9 chords. Like a 13th chord but without the b7th, so they're a little more open and arid sounding.

I love the sound of these 2 cranked right up with some overdrive for some hard rock:

My favorite is Em7 as well:
E 3
B 3
G 0
D 2
A 2
E 0

This particular Em7 has the minor 3rd on top in the voicing. I don't know why I like it so much, but I do.
