I have had some trouble with drivers etc. recently and at the moment my sound card is working well using Intel(R) 82801 CA/CAM Audio Controller.

However this is not compatible with my recording software... Cakewalk Home Studio 2002. Can someone reccomend me a driver that will be compatible with my soundcard Avance AC97, will not make me lose all my sound (like last time), and allow me to once again freely record using Cakewalk HS2002.

Preferably I would prefer it if you have tried it and know it works... Thanks in advance,

Best thing to do would be to find out the sound card maker or the mainboard manufacturer if it's onboard. Then You can figure out what chipset it is and download the latest reference driver directly from the chipset maker. Since you say "Avance AC97", I would think that you would be talking about an Advance Logic chipset, which might be found at www.realtek.com.tw since they seem to have bought out Advance Logic. Grab a flashlight and look on the mainboard for the Advance Logic chip. Then write down all the stuff on it and look around for a reference driver that corrosponds to the chipset's model number

You might want to consider getting a better soundcard (if it's in your budget).
 
I'm not sure why if the sound system is working, it isn't compatable with Cakewalk. Cake' uses normal Windows soundcard drivers, if they work playing back from a media player for instance, Cake' will play with them.
But Cakewalk products do need to have the driver setup properly in options/ audio. It does this the first time you run it after installation, but if you change the soundchip or drivers, you may need to do it again manually by running the profiler in options/audio and also make sure these new drivers are selected devices.

But, Sammy, I think your problem is a simple case of having the wrong record source for your sound input to Cakewalk.
With normal AC97 soundchips, there is only one recording source. This is selected from the sound recording mixer for the sound driver and can usually be either line in, mic in, CD in (if the CD drive has an audio cable to the sound chip but you don't need this anymore) plus sometimes a modem audio input and the stereo output mix.
With this type of soundsystem, Cakewalk can only record from the source selected in the Windows record mixer. How you get to this mixer depends on the Windows version and whether your driver is the standard Windows type or a fancy special one with graphic equalisers and other tricks. Usually, right clicking on the taskbar sound icon will lead you to the settings.
In the case of a plain Windows one, the default setting mixer is for playback - you need to look in it's options or properties menu to show the recording mixer and here is where you select Line in - if that's what you want to record from. Not all possible inputs are shown but you can find a menu of checkboxes "Show volume controls for..." all the available ones. The same goes for the playback mixer and you can mute and uncheck the ones you don't want to make the mixer view tidier.
 
My soundcard is now operating perfectly thank you. Except I am having the small problem of not being able to work in Cakewalk HS 2002.

My soundcard plays everything in Media Player fine, I can record on Goldwave and Sound Recorder fine, etc. Fully functioning except when I load up CW I get an error.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

I have provided screens of this in the hope you may be able to guide me into fixing the problem.

Not in your budget?

How much time have you wasted in the last 2 weeks ignoring what everyone is telling you? If you were billing for your time, I'm sure it would be more than the cost of a cheap SB Live.:rolleyes:
 
How many times have I told you (none but make this the first) that I am ignoring your advice because I am certain there is a solution...

I appreciate your advice however but can we get back on topic now please.
 
Sorry, I wasn't aware of that error.
What happens if you click "use anyway"?
Do you have another audio application running at the same time?
Cakewalk have a "share drivers" option if there is.
That's the most likely cause - maybe you have Winamp, Realplayer or something running in the taskbar - exit them!
 
No I have nothing running at all in the background or anywhere...

If I use anyway I cant select the playback or record arm.
 
Even so, can you try the share drivers and use MME interface options? Close Cake, reopen and see what happens then.
If all else fails, open the Cakewalk folder and find and delete the file "audio.ini". Even though you reinstalled the program, this settings file may have remained from before and picked up by the new installation.
 
I have searched my hard drive for this Audio.ini file... in Cakewalk folder structure where is it?

I mean AUD.INI
Should be in the HS folder.
I'm assuming it HS2002 has the same basic system as Sonar on which it was based.
 
I deleted it... It run a test, and then I am back to that same error again.
 
To be honest now I intend to do the recording at someone elses house, but I still want to mix it at home so I need the playback option in CW.
 
Well, I think we've proved that something in the audio system is upsetting Cake, but apart from the drivers you have being faulty (possible, Cakewalk acceses the drivers in ways that other programs don't), the only thing I know of is contention with some other audio driver in your system.
Possible causes (in the Sound, Video and Gamecontrollers entry in hardware manager) are....
Wave device for Voice Modem.
ATI Rage Theatre. (This is the sound driver of All-in-Wonder video cards).

Right click and disable any of these.

Going back, I did suggest that you changed some settings in HS Options/Audio menu - the "share drivers..." and "Always use MME...". Were you not able to try these? You haven't said.

THe MME one is the clincher - the difference between Cakewalk and other programs. The others use MME anyway, and you say these work. Cakewalk has a special fast access mode that only works with well written WDM type drivers. If they (the drivers) are not - you must Check to use the MME option.

The checkboxes are on the Advanced Tab and you'll have to get past the error warning by "use anyway" to change them.

Actually. I'm assuming you have a WDM type audio driver on your PC - you haven't stated what version of Windows you have.
If Windows98, you will almost certainly not have WDM in which case none of the above option checks will have any effect.
You can have WDM type drivers with Win98SE (and WinME) but most basic soundchips never had these produced for Win98SE.
