Aurolex Mic Isolation

Has anyone used the Aurolex "mini traps" to be used with mics (I don't remember what the actially marketing name is).

They have holes in them that can slide over a mic stand to trap refections (and/or provide isolation with multiple mics - such as drum mic'ing).

If so - have the "artists" commented on having this hunk of grey foam right in front of thier noses?

I find my self wondering just how bad the need is for a product like this (there must be a need - since they are making them). Maybe to isolate drum mics, but I would think there are other, better, more cosmetically attractive ways to reduce relections than foam on the mic!

i haven't seen those, but i did recently see a pic of the Aural-Xpanders by Auralex. And they set them up right behind the microphone. Thought that was a nice idea.

I'm with Benny - seems like a swell idea to me. Especially the little one designed specifically to keep the hihat out of the snare mic...

As I indicated I could see a use on drum mics (for isolation) - candidly I can see a use on a vocal mic, but I was thinking with all the products to mount on walls various traps on stands, with more mic placement options, etc. is the foam on the vocal mic that critical.

I prefer some sound reflection. I'm not an accoutic engineer, so I don't really understand the science - but I question if you need or want a trap a couple of inches from a vocal mic.

I had a situation some time ago where I was picking up a lot of breathing from an acustic guitar player...I had to fab a shield out of an auralex panel I had laying around. It slipped around the mic base and kept his face out of line of sight of the mic element. It worked well. It was a bit awkward at first but after several takes and letting him hear the background breathing he was up to giving it a try.
