hi guys,

I'm finally ready to drop for sound treatment for a new tracking room, sound booth.

Do you have any immediate suggestions? other than the following?

It will be only vocals. I want to keep it at about $100 and right now my choices are:

auralex package at marsmusic.com
24 one-foot square wedgies and 8 tube traps?

markertek:
15 pieces of 54'' *54'' foam at two inches thick. Those are huge pieces about $100

Or a homemade soundbooth using tube traps like sjoko mentioned. about $40

Which do you think I should go with. I am not really good at building stuff but I can try if it will give better isolation

Do you have any suggestions

thanks

I can only tell ya about what I have ... but I think the Markertek 3" 5'x5' sheets work very well. It's cheaper/sq.ft. than Auralex ... but the shipping that you pay makes it about even (definitely "oversized"). You can get Auralex pretty much anywhere ... so shipping is not necessary.
Aesthetically speaking, the edges on the Auralex are probably finished, wheras the Markertek's are not ... so if you plan to mount a bunch side by side, it may look a little off w the Markertek. Other than that, it works very well ... only hi-freq absorption, though ... so you may want to think about bass traps and stuff too.

thanks bigkahuna,

That was helpful info about the absorption frequencies of the marketek.

WHat do you do for low frequency absorption.

Marketek sells bass traps for $20 each .Will two of these work/

thanks

"WHat do you do for low frequency absorption. "

That's easy ... ... ... nothing! (don't tell John)

I'm thinking of trying that tube trap design of Jon T Gale's that had been posted on here a while back. I'm a little procrastinator, though (among other things). I'll get to it someday, I promise! : )

If I remember right, the markertek bass traps were similar to the Auralex LENRD or Sunburst traps ... ie. corner traps. Probably would work well, but I don't really want to permanently adhere something that expensive to the wall ... ya know? That's why I like Mr. Gale's idea ... free-standing ... easy to move around and "tune" a performance area, if needed ... etc. I mounted the markertek foam onto fiber-board and hung them like giant pictures ... just so I could move them if I wanted.
The low-mid absobers is all still rolling around in my noodle ... but I'll get to it someday ... let me quit my day job first! :D

One note - if you use the glue that Auralex sells, you can (carefully) peel the panels off the wall if you want to move em/change rooms whatever

I'm with Mr. Gale. Mount the Auralex on a layer of 1/2" or 5/8" sound board, and hang *that* on the wall. You can take it down, move it around, space it off the wall for more LF absorption, lean two of them together tent-style to make a temporary gobo... I agree that it's much more practical to make all your treatments mobile, just for flexibility's sake. Then, if you later move, you just take them off the hangers and take them with you.

I have 12 of these homemade 2'x4' mobile absorbers. Most are just bare Auralex-on-soundboard, but some of them my wife has covered with textile art (she's a very accomplished quilter). Those we can use up in the living room, and everyone thinks that they are just art pieces- nobody knows that they are actually acoustical treaments...

thanks guys.

You all have convinced me to go the non-permanent route.

How far away from the walls will you say that I should put the foam for maximum sound absorption?

thanks

Studio treatment

I had a hand in Auraulexes studio design and treatment- have had an extensive look at their product testing reports and spec sheets - Absolutely the best cost / effective material available !!!
