aural exciter

Hi all, this is my first post.....just playing around with a bit of home recording....and I am looking for a plug-in for an exciter....free or otherwise...I would like to experiment with one to see what the effects will be like. I have recorded vocals before, but it's that smooth high end sound that I can't seem to get...hoping someone may be able to help

I have recorded vocals before, but it's that smooth high end sound that I can't seem to get...

Don't count on an exciter to give you what you're looking for. They sound pretty nasty on vocals for the most part... jagged and crusty.

There's a freeware VST/DX exciter called the X-Cita that you should be able to find on the KVR audio website. I think Voxengo make one.

As far as "smooth high end" on vocals the most obvious answer to my way of thinking is record with quality microphone like a Neumann U87, AKG 414 or AT 4060. On a less budget look out for the AT 4033, which is a decent vocal mic.

Having a good preamp helps too... and using plugs like the BombFactory EQP-1 or the like.

Thank you for your response.......yes well I was fooling around with an SM-58......and just can't seen to get the sound I'm looking for..EQ, Comp, reverb...and what I have read so far on this board is that I need a large diameter condensor mic...so I thought I would have a go with SP-B1 and feed into a US122....hopefully I should see an improvement...

Ya, with those dynamic mics the high end is usually lacking at 12 to 15khz. Great for stage, not the first thing I'd pick up in studio though. If you're using eq and such chances are that you're trying to boost frequencies that aren't really there to begin with. Definately check into a condensor mic to get that high end shimmering. good luck
