I currently have a Audix i5 dynamic mic. I am fairly happy with it, but wanted to know if I can get better results from a Shure 57. I was told that the Shure 57 was better to mic guitar amps, but wanted some input from someone that has used both. Used mostly for guitar amp mic and occasionally to mic my acoustic.

thanx for input..

Get an sm57 even if you can't get your guitar to sound great through it you'll end up using it down the road for something.

It's a personal preference issue I would say. I like the I-5 a little better on snare, but definately a 57 on gtr amps. The I-5 seems to be a lot brighter to me.

Get The Sm57

dude, no way! sm57 all the way, and get a few while your at it....not only is it much better on a guitar amp/ cab, You'll use that mic on countless other things, drums, vocals, all other instruments ...In my and i am sure many other peoples opinions...it's the best mic ever made...and new they cost $90 bucks...can't beat that for an industry standard
(the I 5 is not a bad mic and has a few different trates but not near as usefull

I've had great results using the 57 on my guitar cabinent. I position it slightly off axis and about 1 inch from the grill.

I have a couple I-5's...I really like them. I'm liking them for Toms and Snare and it works with guitar amp. I don't care for the SM57 or the I-5 alone on my amp cab though...neither of them stand alone well on my set up. I've been going with a blend of E609 and the I-5 lately. The E609 seems to add a little bottom end meat and seems to fatten up the sound a bit more.

I personally like the i5 a lot better on guitar, and a tad better on snare. Haven't directly compared the two with too much else as I don't use 57's anymore now that I have 2 i5's.

Something else that works well for me is the SM57 up close about 1/2 way between the cone and edge of the speaker and an LDC mic about 3 to 5 feet away about a foot above the height speaker cabinet. You gotta move the LDC around to adjut for phase but I really like that set up too.

Well I'll be the odd ball. I have several 57's...I use one all the time for bottom snare. That's it...anymore.

i5 is on top of snare. i5 can work well on gtr...but i don't use it. Tried it thought it was ok..But if something is better to my ear i go with that.

I have not used 57 on gtr in like 4yrs....I hate that sound...Like my amp is having it's nose pinched.

Royer 121 with At4047sv..Or 121 with U195 much more real sounding.

Even better (depending on style) using a 3rd mic for room. I like U99 or U48.

But on the cheap...a Joe Meek JM47 mixed with the R121 sounds great to.
Not as much gerth as the 4047 or U195. But still really cool for a cheap mic.

i5's also take stick hits better...I have a great drummer so I don't worry. But I get some goof balls in some times...I've seen 57's fly apart.

go for the sm57,
and if you want it slighltly better get yourself a sennheiser md421,
i find this last mic better than the 57, on all instruments/vox,
i find it a bit more 'solid', less thin, of course, IN MY EARS
