I am in the market for some drum mics. Have any of you used any of these or heard any thing that was recorded with these. I have been recording only the roland V drums for the last few years but have a few clients that want to use a live kit (can't say I blame them, but the v drums are so easy). I have a relativly small sized room where the drums will be recorded. Dry wall coverd in a few areas with auralex foam. I have never even had a live kit in my studio so any suggestions on what mics to start with or how many to use in a room like mine would be helpful. Do you guys normaly mic each drum or just kick, snare and overheads? Sory if I'm rambling, just looking for a place to start.

hey!

the audix mics are good for toms and mabye snares. but for the
snare i know that a shure sm57 want let you down. for the bass
drum you can't go wrong with a akg d112 or a shure beta 52.

if you have a lot of money this waht i would get...

2 overheads,2room mics,3 snare mics,2 tom mics,1 tom mic(for the floor tom) 2 bass drum mics, a hi-hat mic, a ride mic and a
room mic(for the whole mix)

but you don't need all of those mics to get a good sound.
some people that have bigger brains then walits (like me) use
3-4 mics to get a good sound. bass drum mic 2 overhead mics and a snare mic.

here's something that you can listen to. it's a recording that i made with 3 mics.

I see you figured out how to post stuff, Zeke. Sounds pretty darn good, although the kick is a little distorted for my liking. The cymbals and snare sound great. You added some reverb and EQ to this, right?

What about this package?

Includes Sennheiser E602 kickpack, Shure SM57 mic, 2 Oktava MC012 mics, 2 Audix D2 mics, 2 Audix D-Vice mic clips, and 5 - 20' mic cables.

$699 (is this a good deal)

I'm particularly interested in to know about the Sennheiser E602 because I haven't heard anything about it. Anyone using it?

I want to spend my tax refund on some drum mics but am having trouble deciding.

That Audix pack wouldnt be bad. But im guessing you could probably do better for the same price. First of all, alot depends on what style of music you will be recording. If you are looking for a distinct sound or versatility is what im asking for. Also, what do you have already in your mic cabinet?

As far as kick drum, this will depend again alot with the style. And yes, you can go wrong with a Shure Beta 52 :). From what i have heard from them, they are not nearly as good kick mics as others. Of course that goes for style again, from what i have from the Beta 52 is that it doesnt have much umph, much more rounded sound. Might sound good with maybe country style drums or something, or maybe would be better on a bass cab where you want round bass tones. But all in all, i have heard many people prefer other mics than the Beta 52. The AKG D112 from what i know it to be is the standard for rock music. It has a characteristic which gives alot of snap. I believe this is done by a high end curve with EQ. However, this is not a very versatile kick mic in my opinion. I own the Senheiser E602 and i have been very pleased with it. very thick with alot of umph, and i can usually get that rock sound by using EQ. There are also other ones out there that are good. Check other posts about kick drum mics. The AKG and Sennheiser are both great mics, but it will be more of a preference between the two mics. I chose the Sennheiser because i like versatility and being able to tweak the sound to what i desire if needed.

SM57 on the snare drum. Although there are alternatives.

Overheads are very important. But again this has alot to do with the kind of sound you want to get. These will probably be the hardest mics to choose from, because there is such a variety. People say that small diaphragms are best for rock, and heavy metal, but i have seen people use large diaphragms and get a great sound. I saw Blink 182 using AT4033's as overheads on MTV (even though i despise Blink 182).

Toms i do not know much about, i have seen Sennheiser e604's used and i liked the sound alot but AKG makes great ones too. SM57s work good. Probably again depends on the style but i really cant tell you much in this area.
