Audix d-6

Is this thing any good? I heard somebody say that it was, but I am thinking that there is something fishy about the mic.

I've heard good things about it, and used it a couple of times as well. I'm not an expert on kick mics, having only used the Beta 52 before, but the Audix stood up to the Shure, anyways.

It's great. Personally, I like it better than the Sennheiser 609 (I think that's the part number) and the Beta 52, hands down.

Its perfect for the modern, hard-driving thump+click sound, it's basically pre-eq-ed. Point and shoot, at least with a hole in the front head, just stick it in there, and move on.

Pre-eq-ed also means it may be difficult to NOT get the big thump+click, so if you're looking for a natural, jazzy, whatever sound, it won't be your favorite.

It absolutely kills on bass cabs. Good on floor toms. I keep meaning to try it on scream/yell vocals, and blended on a guitar cab. I have one now, I will buy another.

Nothing fishy about it - it's got its own sound, and that might work for you or it might not. Personally, I like it very much.

i like 'em!!! the pre-EQ makes it very punchy, for modern rock and stuff like that. i'm meaning to try it on bass cabs, and using it on a floor tom sounds like a good idea!

Just curious, what did you hear that makes you think its fishy

They advertise it as producing sub bass frequencies. Those don't exsist in a real natural acoustic kick, so I am under the impression that there is a "fake" sound from the mic. I don't think "fake" is bad, I just am a little curious before I shell $200 on it.

Yeah well a lot of mics claim frequency ranges in the 20hz range, which I would consider low frequency doesn't mean the mics are fishy at all. The d6 is a fantastic kick mic work with the positioning and you can get pretty much any sound you want.

Yeah, just another plug for the d6 - I bought it, and have been very pleased with it. Plugged it in, shoved it in (in no particular place), and wow - the attack and the thump, AT THE SAME TIME. Seriously, I think it's great if you're going for a modern rock sound.

I picked up a D6, but now wish I bought the D4 instead. I don't like the Pre-eq-ed sound, although it's not as bad as the AKG D112. I couldn't decide between the D6 and D4. I got the D6, but luckily a friend bought the D4. I borrowed it from him and used it on some quieter indie folk stuff, and it was perfect.

For really quiet music, I've even liked the Audix d2 - definitely not a kick mic but ends up sounding like the kick from Neil Young's Harvest.
