Auditions for 'Les Mis'!!! I'm so excited.

Hey guys. I just heard that there is a pretty big theater group putting on 'Les Mis' kinda close to me!!!

I'm going to the audition even though they asked for people 14 to 25 years old. I think I could do it and it may be years before another theater group puts it on. If you've been to an audition before please tell me if you think they will refuse to see my audition because of my being a little younger than 14?

Some of you have seen my singing but for those of you who have not please check here. I want this so bad.

Cool - which cat are you auditioning for???? Grizabella or Rum Tum Tugger? Or was that Phantom of the Opera..? :confused:

One thing to beware of: the age thing might just be a guideline. However, it might also be to do with the groups liability insurance (i.e. no coverage for under 14s) or it might be a rule from the local Child Protective Services who require extra chaperones or whatever for younger people. I've heard of both happening in theatre productions.

It's a difficult one but you could get the producers in serious trouble if you lie about your age--and this wouldn't make you very popular for the future. I'd show them your video and be honest about your age. If it's a guideline, your video is good enough to get you in despite the guideline. If there's a serious legal or insurance reason, your honesty will stand you in good stead for the next time.

Many child actors/actress have stage moms and age shouldn't be a factor at all. It may be that they are trying to weed out the immature ones that happen to be under the age that they set.
 
just go to the tryout - whens your birthday? maybe you will be old enough by the time the show starts :)
 
Wow! Great voice! I'd definitely go for it if I were you! Forget the age requirement. If you're just a little younger than the minimum, you could always just round up ;)
 
The question will be how old you are when rehearsals start, rather than how old you are now, I would imagine....

Most shows I've heard of that have "child" stars have multiple options where kiddies are involved, on a rotational basis. But who can tell once you're in cat suit, hey?

Well, I will still not even be old enough when the show is performed because it will be at the end of the summer.

And...this isn't for the musical "Cats", so no cat suit for me! It is for Les Miserables. It is the best Musical EVER!!! I am trying for Eponine, and I will be wearing a huge coat.

I'd be inclined to go along with this, ElenaHouse.
As for the post that badmouthed you, don't worry about him. He's just trying to show he is the current embodiment of a "miserable".
 
I would write them a letter or call them and find out what the deal is with the age requirement. Have you don many auditions? Even if they are firm on the age limit - maybe you could still audition - it might be a good experience for you.

At 12...I was learning guitar and piano...but other than that, I was mainly being a kid and worried about *playing*.
I notice these days some pre-teens have more developed resumes than many middle-aged adults.
Is that the new norm...start real early with a very full plate?

My cousin has her two daughters on a rigorous extra-curricular "program"....dancing, music, soccer, gymnastics, cheer leading, etc..etc. There is rarely a day during the week when her 16 and 10 year old daughters have time to just be "kids".

I'm not being negative about kids wanting to excel at a dozen different things...just not sure how much of that is some "program" they have been placed in, and how much is real, unforced desire...?
There's a very strong push these days that kids must succeed at a very early age at multiple disciplines in order to help guarantee their future success at something, as adults.
It beats hanging on the street corner doing nothing with yourself...but it can be overdriven in some cases.

Rant aside....good luck with the Les Mis audition.
 
Les Miserables trivia time:

In theatre, there's a tradition that the more you can shorten the title when you talk about it, the better your luck will be. At the National Theatre in London (where the show was first produced) they referred to "Les Miserables" as "The Glums".

ETA: Ooops brain fart time. It was the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican, not the National. Otherwise, the story is true!

When I was 12 I was wrestling in backyards and gathering quarters to buy a guitar. That was all I needed. Just a guitar. I bought it, and it consumed my life. I ditched the backyard because I wanted to learn. More songs, more tech specs, I couldnt and still can't learn enough. :laughings: That love eventually spread to other instruments, and other music related things.

I've got some friends that try to do the singing/acting/dancing/model combo thing. But they hate it... it doesnt make any sense. They think they know it all, and couldnt care less about any of those things they do theyre just are on a journey to achieve fame. I can't help but wonder how they would be if their love and drive for fame was instead applied to their craft. Everyone wants success at what they do. To many the epitome of success is fame and fortune. but it's like theyre doing things backwards. they didnt fall in love with what theyre doing and eventually add fame and fortune to their list of craft desires, they fell in love with wanting fame and fortune and decided to act/sing/dance/model/"produce"/ design/whatever...:confused:

To ElenaHouse, it's good that you seem genuinely into it.
Try to find a way to let them know that you're serious and that your age isn't a factor in your performance (assuming of course that is the reason for the age limit and not something else)

I do these things because I love to do them. Some kids like to play in the back yard. I like to play piano and sing. Modeling is something I've been doing since I was 3 because my dads friend is the president of the Atlanta Photographic Society and he loves to use me as a model and we work well together.

I have been in gymnastics and martial arts all my life because my dad owns the Opera House Family Center that offers all kinds of lessons but my focus is music.

Even though my mom is a great artist ( Art by Ling Portraits, reproduction, oil painting, oil pastel, graphite ) she never did more than introduce me to art. She has always supported my music.

I think I do all those things because it's Broadway musicals that I like.

You mom is very talented - guess it runs in the family - so did you contact the play people to see if you could audition?

When I was 12... Hell I don't remember what I was doing...
