I visited this site last night looking for this stuff: Audioseal Sound Barrier .

My problem stems from the fact the the vent running from the HVAC system that runs into my room is shared with the living room above. It is a 12" round duct and the living room sits directly on top of it after it turns 90 degrees in my room.

I get a lot of noise from upstairs and I'm wondering if I wrap this duct with this barrier if it will actually improve the dampening of sound traveling down this duct. My vent outlet is only about two feet from where this opens into the living room, so during any live miking I would have to cover the vent with a sealed enclosure treated with this stuff as well.

I guess my question is would I be wasting my money treating this duct and vent, or should I just wait until no one is at home to record?

Even when I'm not recording I wouldn't mind having the peace and quiet.

I don't think covering the airduct will cure your problem, maybe you need to build a soundtrap and redirect your air outlet.
Then fill it with some fibreglass will help.

I sounds like some treatment has to be done anyway....
Sound probably travells both directions...

When I built this room I hadn't intended on recording in it, it just turned out that way. I didn't know I was going to start another home studio.

When I drew the plans for this room using MS Visio, I had re-routed this duct around the corner of the room. Upon a physical inspection before building, the problems of re-routing the duct became apparent. Too much plumbing (water&gas) and electrical in the way and too expensive to move.

What sort of trap could I use either inside or outside of the duct to control sound? What would be at least a little effective on the inside of the duct but not drastically impede airflow? The duct is large enough to get into to place materials if there is something that would work.

I really do not want to build a box around this duct. It would be too low and give the impression that it is taking up the whole corner. An I don't want the sharp corners where someone (me!) will run their head into it.

I don't believe some fibre will kill us......

To build a trap will take some space......wich seems like a problem. Why don't you look at the type of sound insulation ysed in cars and boats..... it's a special foam used under hood etc.
This might be the easiest way......

The seal you mention would be near impossible to wrap around or fix to a duct. At 1/8" thickness it is as heavy as lead.
There are some very good new wraps availablew for that purpose, I'll get some info and post it.
