I just purchased a used AT815 shotgun mic. I can make it work if I put a battery in it but I can't make it work off of phantom power. I heard a rumour that it requires a battery even if you plan to use phantom power. Is this true?

This is from the AT815b spec sheet:
The AT815b requires 9V to 52V DC phantom power or a 1.5V AA battery for operation. A battery need not be in place for phantom power operation.
I don't know if you have the "b" model, or whether this statement reflects an engineering change. In any case, it doesn't seem likely to me that a battery would be required if you're using phantom power.

Have you checked your mic cable? If you have a voltmeter, you should check for +48V (or so) at the microphone end of the cable. This voltage should show up both on pin 2 and pin 3 with reference to pin 1.

I have used two different cables and two different mic pres. There is no "b" in the model name on the side of the mic. It would be nice to get a copy of the manual for this.

Otherwise it works great. I have a "fish pole" coming next week so I can use it when I do "film crew" gigs after the holidays.

Are you sure your phantom power is +48V? - some pre-amp/mixers provide anything from +12 to +48, and some microphones are very sensitive to this. I have Neumanns which will not work with anything less than +48V.

I have an AT815a and could post .PDFs of the single sheet instructions (2 sides) here if you wish.

That would be cool if you did. Yeah, the switches for the phantom power all say "+48V". It could be broken, I did buy it used.

Mine is an AT815a, and there's no mention of phantom power on the sheet. Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks as if there's no reference there either. I've only ever used the mic with a portable recorder, and have used a "AA" in the mic (to save power). OK - I'll post these, and check the A815a on a board with phantom… …it might be that the AT815a (mine says AT815a on the side) doesn't use phantom power…

OK - here's the scoop…

The AT815a doesn't use phantom power - I just tried mine, and it's OK with the "AA", but won't work with phantom power (looking at the schematic, it's obvious…) I wonder if yours is an "a" (un-marked, or an early model, perhaps?) Anyone know what the official difference is between the "a" and the "b"?

Joro was over at the house the opther night and he looked at the mic and made an interesting observation. Since the thing comes apart to put the battery in, without a battery or a battery cheater (a device that looks like a battery but in fact is a straight piece of wire) there is no way for the power to get from the power module to the capsule.

So it looks like the rumour about having to have a mic (or something in the hole) is true.

If anyone who owns one can confirm that would be great. I might just have to join a pro video forum (yuk) to ge teh answer.

…check the AT-815a schematic I posted (on p.2) - there's no way that phantom power will work with that model if the diagram is accurate. The question is which model do you have?
