hi guys/gals, new to the forum, i'm in the process of setting up a mac based home studio, i've got the apogee duet, and a AT 2020, looking for a second mic to accompany it..something cheap, any ideas? what do you guys think of the 2020? or the duet? any other tips with the set up of the studio!

thanks!

There is a member here who makes mics that enjoy a reputation (here) of being better MICS than AT2020's, better VALUES, and sell for better PRICES. I just can't recall who he is.

I may be coming from an advantaged, snob place on this, but I am no fan of AT2020's- maybe because I own a pair of AT40-series mics...

I've used a duet and own AD16/DA16. Apogee makes good stuff. It almost seems like sacrilege to run an AT2020 through that quality of converter.
I have a pair of AT2020's and a pair of AT2021's. I like the 21's alot more but thay are supposed to be the same guts in different housings. I wanted to 2021's and basically got the 2020's free. (I don't use the 2020's very often if at all.)

Are you talking about Naiant mics?

haha, a sacrilege! what would you recommend for a higher quality mic? something affordable!

thanks

Um, what are you recording? "Better" is very application-dependent.

I have not used the Naiant mics yet, but from what I have read both in forum here and on the maker's website, they seem like exactly what you need.

The best 20-series AT mic is the 2035. More even sound, way less self noise, available for $100 bucks in some circles.

the budget would be up to $250 - 300, recording mostly acoustic guitar and vocals

CAD M179
AT4040
Blue Bluebird
MXL V69 mogami edition
Nady TCM 1150 , Apex 460, Carvin CTM100 (same mic)
Be prepared to do some simple mods on the Nady, Apex, Carvin.

Just a few to look at. Rode makes a couple mics in that range but I have only used the K2 so can't comment on their lower end lines.

RODE NT1a, NT1000 (the 1000 would be at the upper end of your price spectrum)

AKG C3000

Shure KSM-27

Sterling Audio ST55 or ST59

Why dont people use the bluebird arround here?

I think you'll find the AT2020 is a decent acoustic guitar mic. So I'd definitely go with something tailored more for vocals. A CAD M179 is probably a safe general vocal mic. Depending on the vocalist, a CAD M9 might be a great choice or it might be a bit dark.

I have the AT2020... And the Rode NT1a... I love the 2020 on the acoustic but use the nt1a on the vocals...

I recently remembered how much I love my at2020, its actually pretty good on my voice, but then again its the best mic i've used for vox (i need to try / get a rode nt1a)

I have a 2020 and it's nice as a personal "vocal reference" mic.

But I think the Studio Projects B1 is smoother on the bottom/mid-range and is a LDC major budget "sleeper" vocal mic-as long as you have a pretty good ("carry a tune" or better) singer.
