i just got a shure ksm44 so i did tests on it just for yous guys. i wont use the words "versatile" or "workhorse" like i keep reading about it here

1: voice
2: acoustic guitar
3: song

with my particular setup and experience (i am still learning), i think this mic is nice but a little expensive for the sound i get. i like its high end on vocals a lot. i'm bummed with the way it sounds on my guitars. so far, i'm not blown away and i can think of a couple things i'd rather spend $500 on. like drugs and booze. i feel that i was getting similar results with my sm57, although it took more effort. i guess i can;t decide until i record some real songs with it. we'll see

geet, thanks for the internet space

You gotta' be kidding me. Those clips sound freakin' great.

sounds good

Chessrock is right, it sounds like you'll be getting great results with the KSMs (I'm listening on Advent's -- track three is comparable to the new Jack Johnson stuff I was just listening to).

I'd move the mic around a little bit more to find the sweet spot for the acoustic, and roll some brightness off the bass... but these are just tests and that's just my taste.

Please list your signal path so others can get an idea of a decent set up.
Cheers, Rez

it's okay, but i'm nowhere near where i want to be. i'll have to spend the extra million dollars to get a difference that is really glaring to me. it was dumb to think i could get much closer to the music i like by spending only $500 on a microphone. i am dumb

it's also pretty dumb to say any of this crap without having recorded any songs yet

the thing is i feel like i was getting similar results by being really deliberate with my 57. maybe that will change after i record a song. hopefully. it's a million times better than the studio projects piece of motherfucking shit i was borrowing. but so was the 57

Getting a good mic isn't dumb. Expecting it to work miracles might have been a little naive. I somehow get the feeling that if you ever upgrade your monitors, you might appreciate your mic a little more. For a home recording, your clips sound great.

If I were to hear those clips blind and without knowing any better ... I'd probably want to know what mic was used. PM me first before you ebay it.

Sounding good to me. There's a definite jump from some of your older stuff. You aren't exactly running a 'gold channel' though, are you? I think that's pretty excellent for the gear you've said you have.

When do we get to hear some new stuff then? I've got about 15 tracks of yours but need some more! :)

First, thanks for posting this – I love mic demos.

You’re right – the KSM44 sucks. But you are in luck because I will buy it off you for half of what you paid for it. Sell it to me quick before it deprecates anymore! :p

The guitar is sort of plain-jane by itself (no offense, but I think it's the guitar and mic placement, not the mic), but in the mix, it rules and that’s what you want. Pardon my humble opinion, but your vocals could NEVER sound that good with an SM57 (Sorry, I’m just not a ’57 fan – way too nasally for me!).

If you don’t believe me just record a couple of very short, quickie tracks with each mic, singing the exact same song, exactly the same way in both takes. Next, play them back-to-back and listen for differences. Differences may appear subtle at first, but once your ears pick up on them you won’t be able NOT to notice it. Listen for things like 3-D realism or “space” around the sound.

A couple of questions:

Did you use any processing on the song mix and if so, what did you use? (reverb, delay, compression, eq, etc…)

What was your signal path? (preamp, recorder/sound card, etc…)

FWIW, I thought the song sounded great!!!

I have the KSM44 and....It's not getting me the sound of the Everly Brothers :) To put it that way...It's hard to face the fact that a mic only records what it actually hears...

I have a KSM44 and really like it. It is not quite as "airy" as my AKG C414 but that is OK variety being the spice of life and all that !

re: the mix...... it's clean except there is a little compression on the main voice track i think, and the bass is funkified

re: the monitors..... they're event ps6s which i like a lot

Well then you have yourself an excellent mic and a decent sounding room to boot. Every part has a nice open sound and fits together great. Go, be merry, and record.

I'm pretty much in agreement. Time to stop second-guessing. Your signal chain -- whatever it is -- sounds fine. Your room doesn't suck at all.

The stuff I recorded when I got my first real mic and tried to record seriously ... it just sucked so bad. :D You're way ahead of where I was.

I agree - you are way ahead of chessrock! :D ;)

Seriously, don't you just hate folks who get it right the first time... and don't even know it!!!
