Before you go buying plugin and equipment read up on music production first Mixing Handbook by Bob Owinksi or Mixing Secrets for the small studio. Before you go spending thousands of dollars on equip spend a few bucks on a few books first you will save yourself a lot time and money and gain a lot more knowledge way more than you will get here or any forum for that matter. (please don't us any of your new found talents to bring any more lil b or soulja boy's music to the industry set African American race back 50 yrs :D)

Always keep in mind that it's not about which plugins you use, it's about HOW you use them. If you read up on music production or simply look through old threads in forum's like these you will learn so much i'm sure you would be surprised of what you can do while just using stock plugins. I'm not trying to say buying plugins is bad, i'm just saying no plugin will make a great mix, it's all about how much knowledge you have in mixing.

AscendRecording is telling the truth. Much more important is how you record. For example when I started recording real drums I had TONS of plugins on every channel just trying to make it sound good, now with correctly selected mics, room and of course well tuned kit it sound better even without any plugins.

AscendRecording ---> truth!

you really need to know what plugins are doing to your mix. Its never about putting a pile of plugins on a session; its all about the end result sometimes you dont need much. the most expensive piece of equipment in your studio should be your Mic and Pre amp with decent cabling. Everything else should fall into place after that ;)

Always keep in mind that it's not about which plugins you use, it's about HOW you use them.

+1 This.

A carpenter does not need a $1,000 hammer to build a house.
You can find plenty of free or low-cost alternatives out there (kvraudio.com is a great place to start)
and the trick is to know what tool to use and what to do with it, not who puts it on the market.
