I have a Mackie 12 channel mixer that I plug my bass into and go Direct Line into my laptop (Dell Inspiron) to record onto Sonar.

In order for me to hear what I am playing I have to use the Input Monitoring option. The only sound card available to me is Sigma Tel Audio.

Everywhere I read it says that I should use WDM or Asio Drivers because they have a lower latency. If I go to Options> Advance>Playback and Recording.

The only way I can hear what I am playing is if I check the box that says "ALWAYS USE MME INTERFACE EVEN WHEN WDM DRIVERS ARE AVAILABLE"

I do not have a WDM Driver or ASIO Driver option.

If I go to Audio>General and I play with the Buffer Size bar the latency gets better. But never good enought and the lower I go the tone gets awful.

Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try Googling a program called "Asio4All". It contains a"one size fits all" Asio driver package which may or may not help. The program also offers other routing options through software. I agree with the other post though. Monitoring your live input through the Mackie is the best overall solution besides upgrading to a different sound interface.

If you're serious about laptop recording you might look into various Firewire interfaces or Hammerfall's pcmcia options.
