Another neewbie question here. If I buy a usb audio interface does this bypass my built in soundcard in my pc when I am recording?

It can, you still will have the option to select your computer's sound card if you wish, however. For example in Adobe Audition under Audio Hardware Setup, you will see a drop down of all the available audio devices. But yes, your audio interface will act as your sound card.
