Depending on your OS, I'm assuming either windows 7 or 8, you may need to go through and adjust some system settings to make it play nice with your recording gear. Here are links to a good starting point for Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Usually the computer was working too hard, and the buffer emptied. Mine will do this if I have too many reverbs or other intensive plugins on the go, along with lots of tracks. Sometimes, it's not Cubase, it's something you have running in the background that eats up processor power. The performance monitor usually reveals the problem by suddenly zooming up to 100% and then dropping back. If it does this during recording Cubase drops out and tells you.

A great place to start with the links pikingrin posted. Still, there can be other issues with system drivers if that doesn't do the trick. These are not always updated by Microsoft Update nor from the PC manufacturer.

Keep in mind, some systems (Windows based) just run better for some software than others. Different graphics cards, MOBO, ram and drives sometimes just have conflicts.

Start with the basics and troubleshoot from there. :)
