Yea, I've heard pretty good stuff about the Audio Buddy and just wanted to hear what people thought about it compared to a Mackie Pre. I'm just looking for something that is a little better than what's already on my board and cleaner than my ART Dual MP. If you have any other suggestions that would be great too. Remember price is a big issue, thanks........Josh

It will be roughly as good as the preamp on a Mackie Mixer. No better. Cleaner than your tube mp, though. Probably about the best thing you can get for $100.

Some people claim that they are marginally better than the Mackies pres but the consensus seems to be that they are about equal.I'm not sure what board you use but they are refering to the VLZ Pro series whose pres are supposed to be better than the older Mackie boards.

they arent better than a Mackie pre, but they give them a run for the money.....at $40/channel, quite a bargain.........

Especially since you mention price is a factor. The audiobuddy sounds great for the price.

Don't confuse it with their DMP3, though. That one's a little different, and should actually be a little better than what's on your Mackie board. Not by a whole lot, though.

chess, have MAudio actually come out saying the pres are different in the DMP3?

There apparently have been some improvements. The DMP2 has always been highly-regarded as a surprizingly good and clean sounding pre for the price. The only beef with them was the phantom power issue (apparently, it doesn't kick out a full 48V when using both inputs simultaneously). Also, it is easy to overload on the front end if you're recording a loud source or using a loud mic (causing it to distort).

The dmp3 was apparently designed to address both of these issues. Although I haven't read any official statments from m-audio that attest to this, I have heard from some reliable sources that this is indeed the case.

Darrin, you got screwed! But I'll do ya a favor and take it off your hands for $25,I got a sentimental attachment to the little guys(sniff)but it got nothing to do with the fact that they are a nice little preamp.Actually mmmm...one of saved my life in a war!Yeah, thats the ticket!Poor little guy jumped on a grenade to save my life,I never will forget that so now I buy Buddies in gratitude.Unfortunately my wife left me,took my dog and everything else, all she left me was this $25,in my sorrow I need another Buddy.... :D

Sorry I cant help you there, I saw this thing at the mars on the shelf marked 25.00 and I purchased it then and there. Im considering actually recaseing it in a rack front, these 1/3rd rack space units are kind of a pain in the ass.

At least if it were 1/2 rack space I could get a set of ears for it.
