Audio Buddy phantom power issues

The Audio Buddy puts out a nominal 36V phantom voltage: the circuit is a simple voltage quadrupler (a charge pump, basically) based on the raw 9V supply from the wall-wart. If the supply is a little higher than 9V, then the no-load phantom voltage will be a little higher than 36V: mine actually measures 39.7V no-load. It drops off significantly with a mic load on it.

No amount of replacement or repair is going to get the Audio Buddy's phantom further up than about 40V, and it'll be a lot less under load. That's a fact of circuit design, unfortunately: to really materially fix that you'd need to change the circuit design. Charge pumps are a pretty soft supply...

So there are mics that will work fine with this supply, and there are some that just won't. For those, you can buy or build an external phantom supply that will actually meet the P48 specs.
