Hi there guys!
1. post
I'm thinking of buying a 69 Marshall tremolo "50 w" head. It is probably more like a bluesbraker sinve it has a tube rectifier..I'm guessing that in some situations it will be a bit too loud. What experience do you have with the different attentuators like dr z, mass motherload, ultimate etc?

Would you recommend a 4-12 or 2-12 cab to this amp?

Welcome to the forums!

THD makes an excellent power attenuator. I've got a couple well, one freestanding unit and one that's built into one of my amps. I like them, they don't impart too much into the tone and let me play the big amps when everyone's gone to bed.

As for your cab choice, not sure what you're style of music is. I'm a big fan of mixing the speakers up when working at low levels. I particularly like a 2x12 with a G12T-75 and a VIN30. This give you two different speakers to mic up with very different tonal characteristics. Mix/blend them to taste on the recording later.

If you're shopping for a cab, give these guys a look,

Avatar Speakers http://www.avatarspeakers.com/

I've got three cabs from them and you can't beat their prices (let me know if you can). They make a nice solid cabinet and their speaker prices are unbeatable. I have no affiliation with these guys except I'm a happy customer.

Again, welcome aboard!

The only thing i know when it comes to speakers is that I don't like the Celestion vintage 30. I also wasn't happy with a weber that I bought for my Deluxe reverb. The problems I had with these two speakers was that they when pushed produced an annoyingg extra note to the note I was playing. I've also experienced this with a stock Marshall cab...

The style of music I play is 70s rock like led Zep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Hendrix, jeff beck and Münchausen

Its called doping your speaker. Google it. It wasn't your speakers.

Some speaker info, The V30's are classic fare for your genre. I've heard of speakers ghosting like that but usually only when they're brand new and still stiff. Are you sure you broke them in? It can take a bit of time.

thanks for your helpfull answers to my post. I didn't know that you could reduce doping.. The weber also probably wasn't broken in. I use a Jensen speaker in my Deluxe and I'm pretty happy with it. When it comes to chosing a cab I guess I'm ending up with a Marshall 4-12 since it is what I can get used with vintage styling where I live. The Avatar seems amazing.. Or maybe I will buy a mojotone cab with 2-12s in it.

:D

You can't reduce doping; doping is a chemical treatment applied to the paper speaker cone.

To reduce volume in a Marshall 50w, you might want to also consider a set of THD Yellow Jackets. They replace the power tubes (EL34's?) with EL84's, which turn it into a 20 watt (or thereabouts) amp. I've got a set in mine, and they work and sound great.

Good call on the yellow jackets. I've got a set in my THD amp. The only thing is, if he's looking for a major power/volume reduction and still getting that fully driven amp sound, 20 watts is still gonna piss the neighbors off. He might be looking for a little more volume control.

Second ditto on the EL84's. I like their sound.
