I'm not sure what provoked us to do this but my band got bored and we recorded a Pantera cover "Cemetary Gates". Anyone who has heard the real song or even if you haven't, check it out and let me know what you think. We updated some of the parts but otherwise we tried to keep it like the original. Don't knock us too bad, were just having fun.

I must warn you that I'm a serious Pantera fan.. :)

Pretty good man.. There was some minor drum hacking, and the vocals sounded strange recording wise.. Like some of the solos, they sounded a bit too wet.. I must say I did enjoy hearing this here and for the most part this was very good performance wise, but the recording needs some serious help.. I dont know how to help it though..

Great screams at the end!

I also like the way you said 'thank you very much.' It sounded like it was right off of '101 proof live.' :)

The beginning acoustic guitars sounded a bit boomy and the beginning vocals were a bit reverbed out and low, but I must say performed well.. The recording has some bad problems and the drums had some clams, but the vocals and leads were performed very good.. I'm listening again and repeating myself..

Overall, I enjoyed it..

I'd kill myself for you, I'd kill you for myself.. (Phil from 'this love.') :)

Thanks

Thanks B.Sabbath,
I too am a huge pantera fan. I am the guitar player in the group. Our drummer and bass player are both 17 years old so they really aren't big Pantera fans. Its hard to get them to take a song like cemetary gates seriously lol. Anyways thanks for the comments.
More specific suggestions about the recording would be appreciated.

hey Wire,

I wish I could give you some recording tips but I'm struggling with my own repeating problems.. :D

Hopefully someone with a brain can help..

Since your the guitar player I'll say great job on the guitar man! :)

This is the song that hooked me on Pantera so long ago!

Not a bad cover of it. I used to do it in a band as well. Not an easy one to pull off, especially vocally...Phil rules!

OK, a rhythm guitar comes in out of nowhere in the right channel at 2:10.
The clean and distorted guitar channels need to find a better meeting ground in terms of levels...The clean is louder than the heavy...also the clean seems to wander in volume during the verses...

SAM- if I recall the leads on the originals are VERY wet...

Not a bad cover at all...Needs serious remixing and EQ applied.

thanks

Sluice,
thanks for the comments. I will see if i can do something about the volume inconsistentcies (spelling?) lol. Which part of the ending don't you like? I've seen pantera twice and if I remember correctly thats pretty much how they have been playing it for quite some time now. Then again they are always drunk, so maybe they don't know what they are doing? I don't think we could pull off the original ending if we tried haha.
What type of EQ tweaks would you suggest? Certain instruments? or the whole mix?

yeah man

no mix advice here(par for the course) i've been waiting for something like this to come down the pipe, and it came in a big way.AWESOME!!! im diggin the screaming part's to, good job.

thank's for covering the metal, i need my fix ya know.

:p

peace

rick

edit: i just noticed your in statesboro, i have a niece and future nephew that attend southern. last time i was down there, you had to wade through beer cans to get to the front door of the apartment!!!

Oh Man if you could pull off the original ending, you wouldn't be reading this.

As far as EQ, it was a bit hissy so I would start with lowering some of the really high end. But my main complaint was the clean-to-distortion guitar levels. Sounded very imbalanced to me. If you could get those balanced out better, it would improve this tremendously IMHO. Listen to the original...although his chainsaw guitars are compressed to hell, they are still more up front than the cleans, which blend into the soundscape more. Your crunch tracks seems to drop out. All just opinion...

i like it. its not studio quality but a good home recording. how'd you mike the kick drum? i like the way it sounds

Thank you

Megagoo,
I think you hit it right on the spot. This recording is definantly a home recording. We have no isolation rooms or anything like that, just using a single room in my house to record. Anyways glad you guys are enjoying my stuff. Im not as nervous about posting now.
The kick was mic'ed with a Shure Beta 52 just barely inside the kick. There was no muffling device in the kick but he tuned the head pretty low. It pretty much sounded like krap in the room but it seemed to work in the mix. I guess it was just one of those experimental things. Or maybe I read about it on here somewhere? haha I can't remember. Anyways thanks for the comments

SLuiCe,

Yeah I have it playing right now.. There saturated, but it's a different type of wetness..

I agree 100% about the clean to distorted volumes on this.. That would make a big difference right off the bat..

great screams at the end!

bat.. :)

cool

Can't says I heard much pantera; I'm sure it's damn close tho ;)

Is it just me, or does the bass go bye-bye when the heavy part hits? The quiet parts (verses, etc) seem mixed better. I really dig good heavy music, and this is good heavy music :)

Participant,
you really should check out some Pantera if your into heavy music. All the albums are great but I recommend either Vulgar Display of Power or Far beyond Driven. Those are my two favs, very powerful albums. Anyways enough blabbing, thanks for the comments.

Sounds good to me! [BTW, I've never heard the original].

The only two things I can say, in the way of a critique, is that IMO the vocals need to come a little more out-front, and the overall mix needs a little more high-end treble EQ, to 'crispen' it up a little, or give it a more 'airy ambience'.

IMO, Too much direct-in or line-in recording can sound 'canned', or 'dead', with no 'ambience', no matter how many effects you throw at it.

Otherwise, a damn-fine performance, and good recording!

Damn, shred-it man!

Great gutwrenching scream at the end!

;)

thanks for the comments

A Reel Person,
Thanks for the comments man. The comment about direct recording is true but i actually didnt use a pod or any type of line in device on this one. I will see if i can get a little more high end going eq wise. Thanks again
Chris
